Academy Podcast FAQ's

What is a podcast?
A podcast is an audio recording that is available for download on the internet. Its like a radio show, but it's not "live". A podcast is recorded on a computer and uploaded to the internet. Our podcasts are available for download on the Academy website and are aslo included in our RSS/XML feed. People can subscribe to our news feed and will receive updates automatically.

How do I record a podcast?
Audacity is a great, FREE program that you can use to record your podcast. You probably already have this program installed on your laptop. If you need it on your computer at home, you can download it free. If you need some help using audacity, check this out.
In addition to Audacity software, you will need a microphone. Most any inexpensive computer microphone or headset microphone will work.

What should I talk about?
Podcasts aren't real formal, so just start talking and let everyone know what's going on. It's best to stay on target, obviously, so making some notes or practicing ahead of time is recommended. Keep in mind that these should be done within the context of our school and will be available across the globe, so let's keep things interesting and professional .

What do I have to have in my podcast?
You need to start your podcast by identifying yourself, our school and the date of the recording. It's also good to outline what you'll be talking about in your episode. Something like this..."Hello, this is ______ at the Academy High School in Irving Texas. Today is ______ and in this episode I'll be talking about ______ .

How long should my podcast be?
Most of our Academy podcasts should be between two and ten minutes. Its best to keep your podcasts relatively short, and regularly re-occuring. For instance a weekly show about four minutes long will be more popular than a 30 minute show every six weeks. Short and concise shows are easier to record and are more fun to listen to.

What music can I use?
To adhere to federal copyright laws, you must use music that specifically licensed for podcast use. Simply recording your favorite song in Audacity (even if you own the CD) is not allowed. Many bands and individuals are now releasing their music with a Creative Commons license that allows for podcast use. A great place to start searching for music that is OK to use is www.podsafeaudio.com.

How do I submit my podcast?
Your podcast file must be in MP3 format and should be no larger that 10MB. You can email your file as an attacment to dwilson@irvingisd.net or deliver it to Mr. Wilson in Room 129. All podcasts will be reveiwed before they are uploaded to the website. PLEASE keep your original Audacity file in case you are asked to make any changes before publication.

Will I be famous if I record my own podcasts?
Yes, people will think you are cool and your teachers/sponsors will be inclined to give you higher grades if you are a podcaster. Actually, podcasting is a fun way of keeping people in touch with what's going on around campus and getting them involved with what you are doing. Its fun. Its easy. It will make you famous. :-)
