Mrs. Cardwell served as a member of
the IISD Board of Trustees from 1974-80 and returned to the Board in
1993 and has served to the current time. During her tenure, she has
served as president for four terms, vice president for two terms, and
secretary for three terms. She serves on the following Board Standing
Committees: policy review committee, chair; facilities and land
committee; and curriculum, instruction and student committee.
Mrs. Cardwell is the secretary of
Northgate United Methodist Church. She retired from her position as
assistant special events coordinator for the Irving Healthcare System
Foundation. Mrs. Cardwell holds membership in several professional
organizations, including the Texas Association of School Boards, North
Texas Area Association of School Boards, National Association of School
Boards, and the National Association of School Boards Legislative
Network. She is also a member of PTA, having served as president of a
local unit as well as president of the Irving Council of PTAs. Mrs.
Cardwell also served on the District level in various capacities.
Her civic and community activities
are numerous. She is a current member of the Irving Women’s Network,
Irving Sunrise Rotary, Sister Cities, Friends of Irving Library, Irving
Heritage Society, Our Children’s House in Irving Board, and is a past
CEO of the Women’s Division of the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of
Commerce. She is also a member of the YWCA Advisory Committee and a
mentor at Keyes Elementary School. Mrs. Cardwell was president of Irving
Altrusa International three times and has served in various capacities
in the past with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Y-Teens, Irving Ballet Board,
Irving Citizens Policy Academy Alumni Association, Irving Symphony
League, Trustee for Irving Symphony, YMCA, Irving Soccer Association,
Foundation Guild, Irving Centennial Schools Committee, and Keep Irving
Beautiful Board of Directors.
Also, Mrs. Cardwell received the
Crystal Apple Award from the Association for Texas Professional
Educators (ATPE) and the Doyle McKinney Award from the Irving Sunrise
Rotary Club.
Awards received for volunteer
services include Irving High Spirited Citizen Award; American Cancer
Society Irving Academy of Community Services Best Producer, 1997; PTA
Texas Honorary Life Member; PTA National Honorary Life Member; PTA
Extended Service Award; nominee for Altrusa Woman of the Year and
Soroptomist “Women Helping Women”; recipient of the YWCA’s “Woman with a
Heart” award; and member of Women’s Hall of Fame presented by the
Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division.
Mrs. Cardwell and her late husband,
Loye, have five children, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She is a member of the Irving First United Methodist Church where she
served as chairman of the organ fund and serves on the outreach
committee as chair and church council.
