Important Information:

·Each school association/organization is responsible for notifying the Arts Center by October 31 to reserve a tree. Regardless of past participation, a tree will NOT automatically be assigned to your school.  Trees are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of the entry form (Attached)

·For each participating group, the Arts Center will provide a 7.5-foot artificial tree. These trees will be placed on draped platforms ranging from 8’’ to 16” high. Each association/organization is responsible for the decorations, a tree topper and a tree skirt for their assigned tree. Tree skirts should cover the tree stand and the top of the platform. (No electrical lights, please.)

·The dates for decorating the trees are November 25 -28 (Thursday the 24th is Thanksgiving). The Gallery will be open during regular hours and will also be accessible in the evenings for your convenience.

·Local media personalities & community leaders will be invited to judge the trees and cash prizes will be awarded at the Open House on Friday, December 2:  $350 for Best of Show, $250 for First Place, $200 for Second Place and $150 for Third Place. There is also a $250 Viewers’ Choice award. Voting by Arts Center patrons (adults only) for the Viewers’ Choice award will continue through Dec. 18.

Theme:

This year’s exhibition/decoration theme is “A Victorian Christmas.” Did you know that many of the traditions we associate with the celebration of Christmas have their origin in 19th century England? This includes decorating a Christmas tree, sending Christmas cards, caroling and kissing under the mistletoe.

As always, our annual theme offers wonderful opportunities for learning, research and ‘thinking outside the box’ for students and adult volunteers. Each school association/organization is encouraged to develop its own tree decoration motifs. Above all, everyone is encouraged to be creative – and have fun!

►In addition to decorating your tree, it is requested that each school group write a ½ page to one-page description of your tree. This should be attractive and ready for display; the Arts Center has acrylic stands into which the 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper can be inserted.

This written description can focus on your research and the significance of the decorations that were chosen and/or made as well as offer credit to any special individuals or group of individuals that were involved in the project.  This is a great way to help the judges evaluate your tree and for the public to appreciate all your hard work -- and the wonderfully creative way you interpreted the theme!

Judging criteria:

Our invited judges rate each tree on the following criteria:

Overall Appearance - How attractive is the tree overall?

Group Representation - How well does the tree represent the school & the efforts of the students, teachers, and parents?

Use of Theme How well has the group incorporated this year’s theme?

Each tree can earn up to 10 points in each of these categories. Total points for each tree are tallied up, and the winners are determined by the ranking of the four highest totals.

The Viewers’ Choice award is determined by ballots cast by adult visitors to the Irving Arts Center.

Holiday Open House:

The Holiday Open House will be held on Friday, Dec. 2 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The winners of the tree decorating competition will be announced during this special event.

Other activities throughout the evening will include refreshments, balloons, music, special entertainment, photos with Santa Claus, greeting card workshops, special arts & crafts activities and more. Please be sure to invite friends and family to this free event.

Family fundays in december!:

In conjunction with the Holiday Exhibition & Tree Decorating Competition, Santa Claus will be at the Arts Center on the Saturdays of Dec. 3, 10 and 17, 2 – 4 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring their cameras for free pictures. Free Holiday Greeting Card Workshops for children led by members of the Irving Art Association will be offered on those same Saturdays in the Arts Center meeting rooms. In addition, families will also have the opportunity to do some fun hands-on art activities.

For a full listing of special activities and performances at the Irving Arts Center during the holiday season, check out our website at www.irvingartscenter.com.

I sincerely hope your school will be able to participate in the Tree Decorating Competition this year. Please note that there are a limited number of trees, and they will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

October 31 is the deadline to notify the Arts Center of your participation by completing and then faxing or mailing the attached form.

Please note: A tree will not be reserved for your group until this form is received.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. My number is 972.252.7558, ext. 1225, or you may e-mail me at minman@cityofirving.org.
