Bilingual/ESL - Goals and Objectives  

The goal of the bilingual education and English as a second language is that:

I.  Second language learners will perform at an exemplary level academically.

  1. Students will be provided a strong TEKS based curriculum and appropriate materials.

  2. Teachers will be provided sustained support through effective staff development.

  3. Teachers will have assistance in gathering and analyzing student assessment data.

  4. Students will be placed in the appropriate program

II.  Program teachers will implement IISD’s expectations to ensure the academic success of second language learners.

  1. Teachers will be empowered to establish and maintain a climate of high expectations for all students.

  2. Teachers will be assisted in developing a "toolbox" of best practices to meet the various needs of all learners.

  3. Teacher will develop an awareness of the relationship between teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

  4. Teachers will ensure implementation of best practices through classroom observations.

  Students who participate in the bilingual education program will:

  • Demonstrate mastery of IISD’s objectives on grade level every year in either the primary or second language

  • Become competent in listening, speaking, reading, and comprehending, as well as writing of the English language.

  • Demonstrate academic language growth in the second language within 3 years of entering the program, and Graduate from high school

  Students who participate in the English as a second language program will:

  • Become competent in the listening, speaking, reading, and comprehending, as well as writing of the English language through the integrated use of second language methods

  • Demonstrate academic language growth in the second language within 3 years or entering the program

  • Demonstrate mastery of IISD’s curriculum objectives on grade level every year in the second language, and  

  • Graduate from high school
