Science Vocabulary

Angie Nicholes, T. Haley; Carlene Wright, Gilbert

This activity will be used to introduce the vocabulary words.  The teacher will have the vocabulary words with the definition written down on an index card.  The students will work in groups of 4 or 5.  One student will draw a card and type the definition into his alphasmart.  Each of the other students will type what they think the definition is.  Then the student with the real definition will mix up the alphasmarts and read all of the definitions and the students will vote on which one they think is the real definition.   The true definition will be identified and then the process continues until all of the words are completed.

These vocabulary words can come from the science kits or a chapter from the book.

Teacher Prep

1)     Plant lima bean seeds in plastic cups. Place cups in window.

2)     Download exercise (data collection sheet) to AlphaSmarts

Lesson

Using lima beans planted in plastic cups, students will conduct a two week observation and measurement study.  On a daily basis, students will measure growth and describe changes (if any). Data will be collected and entered using the data collection sheet located on a file in your AlphaSmart.

Extensions

For example, as a comparison activity, students can chart in Excel their lima bean growth compared to others.

TEKS 112.5

(2) Scientific Processes. The student uses scientific inquiry methods during field and laboratory investigations. The student is expected to:

            (B) Collect information by observing and measuring

(5) Science Concepts. The student knows that systems exist in the world. The student is expected to

            (A) Observe and identify simple systems such as a sprouted seed

Vertebrate and Invertebrate

Ms. Meza, Keyes

TEKS addressed:  4.2, 4.8

We will use animals that have been researched with our laptops.  One of the science kits included snails, crabs, and frogs.  These animals are vertebrates and invertebrates.  We further extended our research to include other animals which we can categorize in a tree map.  We will make a tree map on our AlphaSmarts using this information.  We will proof read our work using our writing strategies from language arts and swap AlphaSmarts in order to grade each other?s work.

Ecosystems Observations

 Jason Barnett, Keyes

TEKS addressed:  S5.2 b; 5.5 a, b

While studying ecosystems in class, students make their own terrariums and aquariums.  The students use an Alphsmart with their partner to first record steps of making the aquarium and terrariums and then second to record their daily observations. These observations will include when seeds sprout, how much they grow, as well as animal observations, such as description of a snail?s anatomy, and the recording of any fish eggs identified.
