Opportunities for Parent Involvement
Big Brothers/ Big Sisters
(On-going) Coordinate meetings, campus visits, facilitate
mentoring materials; mediate between campus, mentors and teachers. Seven
campuses at the elementary and middle school level participated. The
program is currently into its third year of partnership with IISD.
Educational Summit: B.W. Baptist Church - Community Outreach/PR
(2 Saturdays - one fall; one spring) District personnel present
information on district programs, goals and achievements. Efforts
directed toward increasing awareness and promoting academic achievement
within the African America Community.
Irving Bible Church - Community Outreach/PR
(One evening - fall) The parent involvement
team attends the event to reach out to families in the district and
distribute information regarding opportunities for parent involvement
within the district.
Video Production - Parent Videos
(On-going) Four videos were produced and
distributed via the district website - they included topics for parents
to discuss at home with their children, drug awareness, alcohol
awareness, and internet safety. Local IISD students participated in the
filming of all videos. A parent feedback video was also produce to
promote awareness of the videos among the public.

Parent Involvement Website
(On-going) The Parent and Student Services
website is constantly updated to reflect new and important information
for students and parents. A calendar is being populated that will
indicate the different parent and community events taking place across
the district.

Cinco de Mayo - City of Irving/Center Park Community Outreach
(One Saturday/year) ; It gives the parents and
community in general access to knowledge and information regarding the
Parent Involvement Program. It also provides the coordinators with the
opportunity to collect information from various agencies to later
distribute to parents.
Parents Step Ahead - El Hispano News/ Gilbert Elem Community Outreach
(Two events last year) Austin and Bowie
participated in these events. There were about three hundred families
represented at both events. Community Services information was provided
by agencies as well as parenting tips and strategies, and district and
campus - based initiatives of the Parent Involvement Program. Two
computer systems with printers were raffled to families in attendance at
each campus.
African American Student Mentoring Program - MacArthur, Nimitz,
Travis
(Weekly) At risk students are I.D; mentors from
the community are recruited and trained. Students are mentored in the
areas of: Life Skills, current events, educational and career goal
setting; personal growth; sporting events; college trip; and, EOY parent
event.
This program grows every year and is solely sustained by
volunteers and a district coordinator. (Mentors needed all the time!)

Community Service Learning Committee
(On-going) Parents are encouraged to contact
site coordinators at Nimitz High School in order to become involved in
the activities sponsored by this committee. This program is solely
driven by students’ ideas and projects with assistance from parents and
school personnel.
DIC Parent Involvement Committee
(A few but very meaningful evening meetings per
school year) Opportunities to serve are always available. Parents
get to have a unique voice and direct impact on the policies and ideas
that drive the parent involvement efforts in the school district.

District Parent Advisory Council
(6 evening meetings/year) Present information
pertinent to Parent Involvement; district surveys (PRIDE; Parent
Involvement) ; school calendar input, general concerns and ideas and the
discussion of upcoming parent and district events.
HIPPY Program
(Evening and Morning meetings throughout the school
year) Parent training for pre - school youngsters. Opportunity to
serve on the HIPPY Parent and Community Advisory Committee. More contact
and cross program activities are taking place between the HIPPY and the
Parent Involvement Program to promote family and community engagement.

Pregnancy Response Services
(On-going) Opportunities to mentor and provide
guidance and support to teen parents as they strive to graduate them
from high school.
Main University - all Middle Schools
(7 evening meetings in April/May) This is a
summer school program created by science and math teachers at Lamar MS
created for the purpose giving transiting 8th graders an edge
in the areas of science and math as they move into high school. Parent
sessions are designed to address the importance of reinforcing math and
science principles at home as well as internet safety and good study
habits.
Bereavement Program
(On-going) solicit community partners to assist
IISD families experiencing tragic events.
Parent Info @ Grocery Stores/ Kiosks
(On-going) Solicit partnerships with grocery
stores to display parent information via flyers, pamphlets, and computer
programs; provide the information.
Strong Fathers/ Strong Families
Several events took place at several elementary and
early childhood schools to promote and influence male parent
participation in the academic development of their children.

“I
am Present” Truancy Prevention Program
(Two classes/month) New Program; anticipated
implementation in a pilot format - spring ’10. Identify students; invite
parents/ students; and, conduct class presentations. (Video to be used
in this program is currently in production)
Title I Parent Involvement Program
(On-going) Facilitate the accomplishment of the
3 Title 1 Parent Involvement requirements on all campuses (Title I
parent meeting; parent involvement policy; School - Home compact) ;
Document and data collection.
Practical Parent Education
(Weekly, moving from campus to campus) Solicit
families from campus counselors; teach parent classes.
Parent Academy: How to Navigate the System
Accessing and reading Parent Connect on - line;
understanding district/ campus policies and procedures; the importance
of parent involvement; parent involvement opportunities; requesting and
handling parent conference, etc; all available district programs (ex:
GT, Bil/ ESL/ Dual; Honors, AP, Dual Credit ect.) ; college/ career
readiness (4 year plans; Career Cruising; Cooter) ; social services
provided by the district and the community.
Campus Parent Centers
Identify campuses with/without parent centers. Assist
in the establishing/revitalizing Parent Centers.
