Barton's History

Lee Bose Barton, 1894 - 1966
In 1914, Mr. Lee Bose Barton and his wife, Lena, purchased a farm in the community that was then known as Sowers. Sowers was later incorporated into Irving.

Their farm covered the area from Fouts Street to Pioneer. It included the property where our school is located on Conflans.

Lee's children attended Sowers School, which was located on the street we now call "Pioneer". Mr. Barton was a trustee for Sowers School for thirty-five years.

In 1956, L. B. Barton Elementary School was built and named after Lee Bose Barton.

Barton Celebrated 50th Birthday

Barton Elementary School, which opened in the fall of 1956, held a 50th birthday celebration March 8, 2006 during Texas Public Schools Week, in conjunction with the school's open house.

During his remarks, Superintendent Jack Singley expressed his respect for school namesake Lee Bose Barton and former principal C.R. Clodfelter. L. B. Barton, who previously owned the land where the school is located, served three decades on the school board in his community. Clodfelter was a key figure in establishing the school's legacy while serving as principal from 1960 to 1972.

Many alumni of Barton attended the event. Dallas County District Court Judge Lana Rolf McDaniel shared her memories of attending the school. Dallas Cowboys running back and Irving High graduate Tyson Thompson also attended, reuniting with his kindergarten teacher, Denise Schuster.

Randy Stipes, IISD Board of Trustees president at the time, provided welcoming remarks, while Irving Mayor Herbert Gears presented a city proclamation in honor of Barton's birthday.
