Newest Elementary Named For Townsell

The Board chose Irving activist and community leader Jackie Mae Townsell as the namesake for the District’s 19th elementary school now under construction at the corner of Northgate and Pleasant Run.

By unanimous vote, the school was named in memory of Townsell, the longest-serving member of the Irving City Council and its first black member. Townsell was an early leader in the local civil-rights movement and an advocate for children. A resident of the Bear Creek area since 1949, Townsell served as President of the Bear Creek Cemetery Association and the Bear Creek Heritage Society. Townsell died of a heart attack in October. She was 66.

Wendzel Given Hero Award

Sharon Wendzel, French teacher at Irving High School, was presented with the Bayard H. Friedman Hero Award by Score A Goal In The Classroom, a local education advocacy group. Wendzel was originally given the award during a short ceremony at a performance of The Nutcracker at the Music Hall at Fair Park in December. She was recognized again, February 3, by the Board of Trustees and Score A Goal In The Classroom Executive Director Ernie Horn. The award names Wendzel “the most outstanding French language teacher in North Texas.” Wendzel has been a teacher for 32 years. Her husband, Gary Wendzel, is a computer science teacher at Irving High.

	Approved the minutes of the Noon Work Session and Regular Board Meeting on January 13, 2003.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-46 authorizing joint election agreement between Irving ISD and other political subdivisions for administration of election by Dallas County.
	Authorized the purchase of Windows 2000 Client Access License through catalogue purchase process.
	Approved revised decision-making matrix for District Improvement Committee.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-47 accepting proposal for electronic document management system.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-48 accepting bid for towels, tissues and soap.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-49 accepting bid for carpet and tile.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-50 accepting bid for integrated pest management.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-51 accepting proposal for managed phone service.
	Authorized the purchase of additional track equipment from previous bid.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-52 accepting design development phase for Johnston renovations bond construction project.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-53 accepting design development phase for Good renovations bond construction project.
	Approved Resolution #02-03-54 accepting design development phase for Davis school renovations bond construction project.
	Approved class size waiver for Spring Semester 2003.
	Approved Order #02-03-02 regarding superintendent’s recommended program changes related to Board Policy DFF (local) and pursuant to Order #02-03-01.
	Approved first reading and filing authorization of policy revisions for EIE (local), pertaining to academic achievement: retention and promotion.
