District Honored for Reading Program
The IISD Reading Recovery program
was recognized November 10, 2008 by Texas Woman’s University Billie J.
Askew Reading Recovery & Early Literacy Institute for 20 years of
service to students in the Reading Recovery program.
According to department officials,
Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention featuring
one-to-one tutoring for the lowest achieving first grade students. As of
August 2008, more than 3,000 first graders in Irving ISD have been
served in Reading Recovery.

November 10, 2008 and Special Called Board Meeting on November 17,

Approved Resolution #08-09-57 authorizing purchase of digital
language labs from Educational Media, LLC. for Crockett Middle
School, de Zavala Middle School, Houston Middle School, Travis
Middle School, and Union Bower Center for Learning at a total cost
of $120,000. |

Approved campus and district attendance committees for 2008-2009 in
accordance with Section 25.092 of the Texas Education Code. |

Approved Resolution #08-09-58 accepting construction documents phase
for Irving High School, Administration Annex, and Food Service
Center bond construction projects at an estimated cost of
$12,459,065. |

Approved Resolution #08-09-59 authorizing an agreement with
Prospering Pals Co-Op for procurement of USDA Commodities Processing
Services, enabling cost savings and the maintenance of low meal
prices. |
|
Approved revisions to Board Goals, Vision Statement, and Mission
Statement to address various areas of educational needs and to focus
efforts on another year of positive growth. |

Approved Resolution #08-09-60 accepting Second Reading and Final
Approval of Revised Board Policy FO (Local) inclusive of policy
language prohibiting the use of corporal punishment. |
|
Approved Resolution #08-09-61 accepting Second Reading and Final
Approval of Revised Board Policy CH (Local) revising the amount for
bids, offers, proposals, awards and contracts that must be
authorized or approved by the Board of Trustees. |
|
Approved Resolution #08-09-62 pertaining to the election and
resignation of personnel as recommended by the superintendent. |
|
Approved Resolution #08-09-63 accepting gifts and donations to the
district for the month of November 2008 totaling $67,408. |
|
Discussed first draft of amendments pertaining to Board Executive
Committee and Board Curriculum and Instruction Committee
resolutions. |
|
Considered continuation of participation in University of Texas at
Arlington Field-Based Urban Collaborative for Educational Leadership
Program, requesting authorization for as many as three interns for
the 2009-2010 school year. |
|
Discussed high school credits for grade classification, increasing
the requirement to become a junior from 11 to 12 credits and to
become a senior from 17 to 18 credits beginning with the graduating
class of 2012. |
