Fields Recognized for
National Competition
Breanna
Fields, 2009 graduate from MacArthur High School, was recognized by the
Irving ISD Board of Trustees for having participated at the Senior
All-Star Gymnastics Championships in Chicago May 22-23. Fields won the
silver medal in all-around competition, contributing to the Texas
women’s team’s overall win.
Fields was
named to Texas National All-Star Gymnastics Team in May. In addition to
her second place finish in the all-around, Fields placed fourth in
vault, second in balance beam, and third in floor exercises. She was
also named to the Dallas Morning News SportsDay all-area girls’
gymnastics team.
Fields will
attend Stephen F. Austin State University after working during the
summer as a camp instructor with Universal Cheerleaders Association.

Students Honored for
National Recognition
IISD Trustees honored
five 2009 high school graduates for having been recognized by the
National Merit Scholarship Corporation as being National Achievement
Scholars or National Hispanic Scholars.
2009 IISD National
Achievement Scholars were Paula Ikpatt, MacArthur High School; and Nadia
Barksdale, Nimitz High School. National Hispanic Scholars were Rafael
Diaz and Stephanie Fernandez, MacArthur High School; and Amy Villarreal,
Jack E. Singley Academy.
Winners in the
National Hispanic Scholar and National Achievement Scholar programs are
determined by students’ performance on the Preliminary Scholastic
Assessment Test (PSAT) and further demonstration of academic success in
school. National Achievement Scholar status is also determined by
Scholastic Assessment Test scores.

Cochran Recognized for
State Teacher Award
Janet Cochran, health
teacher and gymnastics coach at MacArthur High School, was recognized by
the IISD Board of Trustees for having been named Texas Association for
Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (TAHPERD) 2009 K-12
Health Teacher of the Year.
In April, Cochran was
also named co-lead coach for the women’s National All-Star Gymnastics
Team from Texas, and was recognized as 2009 Coach of the Year by the
Texas high School Gymnastics Coaches Association. |
