New Members Seated, Officers Elected

After a unanimous decision by the Irving ISD Board of Trustees, Order #09-10-02 was approved pertaining to canvassing the May 8 election returns and declaring results of an election of trustees. Gwen Craig was elected to Place 5, Jerry Christian was re-elected to Place 6, and Ronda Huffstetler was re-elected to Place 7.

Craig, Christian and Huffstetler were administered the oath of office by Judge Mark Whittington. The trustees then conducted an election to name board officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Trustee Valerie Jones was elected as president, Trustee Nancy L. Jones was elected vice president, and Trustee Heather Ashley was elected secretary.

UIL Academic Competitors Recognized

MacArthur High School students participating in University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic State Meet were honored for having competed May 7-8.

Pearl Choi was recognized for winning first place overall in Ready Writing. The Social Studies team was recognized for winning third place as a team, with Jin Ae Sakai winning fifth place overall. Social Studies team members are Sakai, Jenny Bachand, Ishrat Durdana, and Grecia Higareda. The Spelling & Vocabulary team was recognized for winning fifth place as a team. Spelling & Vocabulary team members are Stephanie Akpunku, Jenny Bachand, Natalie Bradford, and Mariella Ngoue.

MacArthur UIL academics coaches are Janice Battles, Ready Writing; Cody Dollar, Social Studies; Blaine Mountain, Spelling & Vocabulary; and Assistant Principal Connie Riley is the MacArthur UIL administrative coordinator. Cynthia Bean is principal.

The MacArthur High School University Interscholastic League Academic State meet were honored for their state-level competition during the IISD Board of Trustees meeting May 17.

Tuttle Honored as Teacher of the Month

Katie Tuttle, sixth grade math teacher at de Zavala Middle School, was honored for being named Teacher of the Month for May. Tuttle joined Irving ISD in 2006 after earning her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Christian University.

A product of Irving ISD schools, Tuttle attended Britain, Good and Townley elementary schools, Bowie Middle School, and graduated from Nimitz High School. She completed her student teaching at Davis Elementary School and Crockett Middle School, and is certified and Highly Qualified in mathematics grades 4-8.

Trustee A.D. Jenkins honors Katie Tuttle, sixth grade math teacher at de Zavala Middle School, for having been named IISD Teacher of the Month for May.

Del Cid Recognized as Employee of the Month

Neftali Del Cid, building manager at Lamar Middle School, was recognized for being named Employee of the Month for May.

Del Cid joined Irving ISD as substitute custodian in April 2006. He became floor care team leader in September 2009, and in August 2007 he was promoted to building manager at Lamar.

Board of Trustees President Valerie Jones recognizes Neftali Del Cid, building manager at Lamar Middle School, for having been named IISD Employee of the Month for May.

	Approved minutes of noon work session and regular board meeting on Monday, May 3, 2010.
	Approved financial statement for March 2010.
	Approved Resolution & Order #09-10-22 authorizing May amendment to the 2009-2010 budget increasing total budgeted revenue to $284,053,149 and decreasing total appropriations to $295,807,965.
	Approved Resolution & Order #09-10-23 accepting supplements to the Irving ISD tax rolls.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-124 granting easement to City of Irving to replace one of two existing sewer lines under the athletic field at de Zavala Middle School during the summer months.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-125 accepting CSP #10-15 from ScoBilt Contractors, Inc., and awarding the contract for Brown Elementary School special education classroom bond construction project at a total contract amount of $105,000,
	Approved Resolution #09-10-126 accepting CSP #10-12 from Intex Electrical Contractors, Inc., and awarding contract for Administration Building generator project at a total contract amount of $131,135.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-127 approving purchase of classroom furniture for Irving High School, Cardwell Career Preparatory Center, Lamar Middle School, Keyes Elementary School and Townley Elementary School through an agreement with Indeco Sales, Inc., at a total cost of $94,886.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-128 extending term of legal contract for collection of delinquent taxes to June 30, 2011 to coincide with the retainer contract for general legal services.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-129 naming middle school #8 as Lady Bird Johnson Middle School.
	Approved Resolution & Order #09-10-24 through #09-10-26 pertaining to 2010-2011 salary schedules for all employees other than teachers, reflecting an average 2 percent of new money.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-130 accepting first reading and filing authorization of TASB Update 87 and other Policy EEJB (Local) pertaining to personnel matters.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-131 accepting CSP #10-20 from SYB Construction Company, Inc., and awarding contract for playground equipment site preparation project at a total cost of $209,700.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-132 accepting CSP #10-21 from PlayPower LT Farmington and awarding contract for playground equipment project at a total cost of $707,816.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-133 awarding contract to Corgan Associates, Inc., for 2007 bond construction projects at Bowie Middle School and Brandenburg Elementary School.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-134 awarding contract to KAI Texas, LC, for 2007 pond construction projects at Good Elementary School and Secondary Reassignment Center.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-135 awarding contract to PBK for 2007 pond construction projects at Austin Middle School and de Zavala Middle School.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-136 awarding contract to Perkins+Will for 2007 bond construction project at Davis Elementary School.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-138 pertaining to the election, renewal, and resignation of employees as recommended by the interim superintendent of schools.
	Approved Resolution #09-10-139 accepting gifts and donations to the district for the month of April totaling $64,895.
	Received departmental reports from the Division of Business and Finance regarding total tax collections, payroll and investment earnings; and from the Division of Support Services regarding the monthly maintenance work order summary report.
	Received announcements from the administration regarding Retiree Awards May 20, high school graduation June 4 and 5, student/teacher holiday May 31, and a construction update.
	Received public input on the 2010-2011 budget.
	Received an overview of 2010-2011 first budget draft with preliminary recommended staffing needs.
	Discussed the 2010-2011 Board of Trustee meeting dates.
