New Members Seated, Officers Elected

After a unanimous decision by the Irving ISD Board of Trustees, Order #09-10-02 was approved pertaining to canvassing the May 8 election returns and declaring results of an election of trustees. Gwen Craig was elected to Place 5, Jerry Christian was re-elected to Place 6, and Ronda Huffstetler was re-elected to Place 7.

Craig, Christian and Huffstetler were administered the oath of office by Judge Mark Whittington. The trustees then conducted an election to name board officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Trustee ­­­­­­­­­­Valerie Jones was elected as president, Trustee Nancy L. Jones was elected vice president, and Trustee Heather Ashley was elected secretary.

UIL Academic Competitors Recognized

MacArthur High School students participating in University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic State Meet were honored for having competed May 7-8.

Pearl Choi was recognized for winning first place overall in Ready Writing. The Social Studies team was recognized for winning third place as a team, with Jin Ae Sakai winning fifth place overall. Social Studies team members are Sakai, Jenny Bachand, Ishrat Durdana, and Grecia Higareda. The Spelling & Vocabulary team was recognized for winning fifth place as a team. Spelling & Vocabulary team members are Stephanie Akpunku, Jenny Bachand, Natalie Bradford, and Mariella Ngoue.

MacArthur UIL academics coaches are Janice Battles, Ready Writing; Cody Dollar, Social Studies; Blaine Mountain, Spelling & Vocabulary; and Assistant Principal Connie Riley is the MacArthur UIL administrative coordinator. Cynthia Bean is principal.

The MacArthur High School University Interscholastic League Academic State meet were honored for their state-level competition during the IISD Board of Trustees meeting May 17.

Tuttle Honored as Teacher of the Month

Katie Tuttle, sixth grade math teacher at de Zavala Middle School, was honored for being named Teacher of the Month for May. Tuttle joined Irving ISD in 2006 after earning her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Christian University.

A product of Irving ISD schools, Tuttle attended Britain, Good and Townley elementary schools, Bowie Middle School, and graduated from Nimitz High School. She completed her student teaching at Davis Elementary School and Crockett Middle School, and is certified and Highly Qualified in mathematics grades 4-8.

Trustee A.D. Jenkins honors Katie Tuttle, sixth grade math teacher at de Zavala Middle School, for having been named IISD Teacher of the Month for May.

Del Cid Recognized as Employee of the Month

Neftali Del Cid, building manager at Lamar Middle School, was recognized for being named Employee of the Month for May.

Del Cid joined Irving ISD as substitute custodian in April 2006. He became floor care team leader in September 2009, and in August 2007 he was promoted to building manager at Lamar.

Board of Trustees President Valerie Jones recognizes Neftali Del Cid, building manager at Lamar Middle School, for having been named IISD Employee of the Month for May.
