Acosta Recognized for Heroic Action

During the regularly scheduled meeting of the IISD Board of Trustees November 15, Trustees and City of Irving Fire Department recognized Abel Acosta, senior at Irving High School, for performing the “Heimlich maneuver” to assist a fellow student at Irving High October 29.

As school dismissed for the day, Acosta noticed a student drinking from a soda can near the school’s west exit area, and watched the boy as he began to act as if choking.  Acosta said he thought the student was pretending, but then noticed the student’s face was turning red.  Acosta applied the Heimlich techniques he had learned from the posters in his family’s restaurant, and the object – a soda can pop-top – was ejected from the student’s airway.

Oncor Presents Award to IISD

Irving ISD was awarded a $34,357 incentive check from Oncor’s Take A Load Off, Texas, Educational Facilities Program (EFP) for increasing the energy efficiency of seven air conditioning systems in five school buildings. By switching to high-efficiency air conditioning units, the district will save more than 230,300 kilowatt-hours of energy annually.

According to Environmental Protection Agency calculations, the IISD greenhouse gas reduction is 165 metric tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the emissions of approximately 18,600 gallons of gasoline, 32 passenger vehicles, or 20 homes. High efficiency air conditioning units were installed at Hanes Elementary School, Johnston Elementary School, Lamar Middle School, Travis Middle School, and Singley Academy.
