September 19, 2005 Board Meeting

Johnstone & Fletcher Honored as Teachers of the Year

Gail Johnstone, bilingual first grade teacher at Gilbert Elementary School, and Gina Fletcher, instructional specialist at de Zavala Middle School, were honored as this year’s Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year at a meeting of the Board of Trustees held in the MacArthur auditorium.

Both teachers received an engraved plaque, a photo by Lifetouch, a gift certificate from A+ Teach R, a piece of jewelry from Gold ’n Carats, and $500 from the Irving Schools Foundation. Johnstone and Fletcher were chosen from among 37 Campus Teachers of the Year across the district.

Johnstone has been teaching in the IISD for 13 years, nine at Gilbert. A graduate of Texas Christian University, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and French and a Master of Arts degree in Spanish. Johnstone is certified as a bilingual/English as second language and elementary self-contained teacher.

Every child can be successful is the central theme of Johnstone’s philosophy of teaching.

“I believe that each student can learn in his own way and time,” she wrote in her essay about teaching for her Teacher of the Year application. “My philosophy of teaching is composed of three elements: teaching methods that support different learning styles; discipline based on the golden rule and motivation rather than punishment; and parental support.

Fletcher has taught 13 years in the district, three at de Zavala. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and elementary education from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is certified to teach history and elementary education, grades one through eight.

“Any average teacher can learn how to teach the curriculum,” Fletcher wrote in her essay. “It takes that dose of genuine concern for your students to separate the average teachers from the excellent, well-respected, well-loved teachers. Teaching the curriculum is the ultimate goal, but that really cannot be done successfully without building rapport with your students.”

A reception for both teachers as well as the Campus Teachers of the Year was held before the meeting.
