Meeting
Hermans Honored as Teacher of the Month
Bruce Hermans,
theater arts teacher at Nimitz High School, was honored as Teacher of the Month for
December. A graduate of Luxemburg Casco High School in Luxemburg, Wis., Hermans earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater and business from
Carroll College in Wisconsin. He later completed a Master of Fine Arts
degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
After working as a
college teacher, designer and computer engineer, Hermans decided to
become a theater arts teacher in public schools. After earning his
certification through a post-baccalaureate program at the University of
North Texas, he joined Nimitz in 2004.

Brewer Recognized as Employee of the Month
John Brewer,
custodial coordinator of operations in the Facilities Services
Department, was recognized as Employee of the Month for December. He has
been employed with Irving ISD since 1981, beginning as a part-time
custodian and working as small motor mechanic and appliance repair
technician before becoming custodial coordinator. In his spare time,
Brewer enjoys watching NASCAR racing.

Christmas Card
Design Winner Honored
Brittany Urquhart,
Irving High School junior (left), is the Irving ISD Christmas Card
Design Contest winner for 2005. For the first time, a computer-generated
piece of artwork won the top prize. She is joined by her art teacher,
Jonathan Fontenot (right), and Alfred Green, fine arts director for
IISD.

Board Receives Commencement Survey Results
The IISD Board of
Trustees received results of surveys given to seniors, high school
faculty and parents on allowing the participation of students in
graduation ceremonies who have not completed all graduation
requirements, including passing exit-level TAKS.
Feedback also was
received at the District Improvement Committee (DIC), Parent Advisory
Committee (PAC) and high school Campus Improvement Committee (CIC)
levels. Survey results included: seniors - 76 percent for; parents - 73
percent for; teachers - 57 percent for; counselors - 57 percent for;
administrators - 48 percent for; DIC - 50 percent for; PAC - 93 percent
for; and CIC - 28 percent for. A final decision on the issue rests with
the Board of Trustees.

Cabaret Ensemble performed holiday songs prior to the Board of Trustees
meeting on Monday, December 12.
