Myers Honored as Teacher of the Month

David Myers, biology teacher at MacArthur, was honored as Teacher of the Month for December. A graduate of Irving High, Myers earned a Bachelor of Education in health and physical education from the University of Texas at Arlington. He also holds a Master of Education in secondary education from the University of North Texas. Myers began his teaching career with Irving ISD as a PE teacher and coach at Travis in 1977. He transferred to MacArthur as a biology teacher and coach in 1979 and became a full-time biology teacher in 1992. He currently serves as the Science Department chair at MacArthur.

Williams Recognized as Employee of the Month

Brenda Williams, compulsory attendance facilitator at MacArthur, was recognized as Employee of the Month for December. She began her career with Irving ISD in 1986 as a lunchroom monitor and served as receptionist from 1990 to 1994. Williams has served as compulsory attendance facilitator at MacArthur since 1995.

Schools Honored for Awards and Achievements

The IISD Board of Trustees recognized schools that have received state or national recognition in recent weeks for academic performance. Seventeen schools – Irving High, MacArthur, Academy, Austin, Crockett, Houston, Lamar, Travis, Britain, Elliott, Farine, Gilbert, Good, Hanes, Thomas Haley, Townley and Townsell – received Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the state. Austin, Crockett and Lamar were recognized for making Texas Monthly magazine’s list of the top public schools in Texas. Irving High, MacArthur, Nimitz and Academy were honored for making Newsweek magazine’s list of top U.S. schools.


Irving High, MacArthur and the Academy were recognized for receiving Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the state.


Austin, Crockett, Houston, Lamar and Travis were recognized for receiving Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the state.


Britain, Good, Thomas Haley, Farine and Elliott were recognized for receiving Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the state.


Hanes, Townley, Gilbert and Townsell were recognized for receiving Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the state.


Austin, Crockett and Lamar made the December 2006 issue of Texas Monthly and its list of best public schools in Texas.


Irving High, MacArthur, Nimitz and the Academy made Newsweek magazine’s list of top 1,200 U.S. schools, published earlier this year.

Approved Resolution #06-07-29 of the Board of Trustees of the Irving Independent School District authorizing preliminary action in connection with the proposed issuance of the district’s Unlimited Tax Refunding Bonds, Series 2007. Under current market conditions, projected savings on refunding portions of outstanding series 1997, 2001 and 2002 bonds at a lower interest rate is $3,618,689. Approximately $70,505,000 of outstanding principal from these three series could be refunded.

Approved Resolution #06-07-30 accepting proposal of third party administrator Texas State Billing Services for Student Health and Related Services (SHARS) at a cost of 8 percent of Medicaid proceeds received.

Approved Target Field Trip Grant applications for 16 teachers plus Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), which is 13 campuses plus HIPPY. The grant proposals cover 16 proposed field trips with grant requests ranging between $400 and $1,000.

Approved BAE Systems applications from Elementary Curriculum & Instruction (elementary science coordinators) and from Austin. Austin’s request for a proposed after-school math & science program is $7,134. The coordinators’ request for expanding the number of data loggers at elementary campuses is $9,000.

Approved Resolution #06-07-31 authorizing purchase of service agreement for chiller maintenance with Region IV Service Center and service provider Trane through the interlocal agreement process in the amount of $40,564.

Approved Resolution #06-07-32 authorizing purchase of Leveled Literacy Library from sole-source vendor Pacific Learning in the amount of $26,332 to be paid with Title I funds.

Approved Resolution #06-07-33 authorizing purchase of Bilingual Science Backpacks from sole-source vendor Santillana USA Publishing Company in the amount of $41,574.
