Won Named Outstanding Graduate

Dr. Douglas Won, a 1990 graduate of MacArthur, was honored as an Outstanding Graduate. He is a spine surgeon specialist for Southwest Spine Institute, which has an office in Irving, and also serves as a clinical assistant professor for UT-Southwestern Medical School.

After graduating from MacArthur High School in 1990, Dr. Won attended Harvard University for two years and graduated from Northwestern University with a distinguished honor degree in engineering. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine – again with distinguished honor – from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and subsequently completed his internship and residency at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Won, who was just 11 years old when his family moved to Irving from South Korea, distinguished himself as a student in Irving ISD. While at MacArthur, his endeavors outside the classroom included serving as a hospital transporter for the Irving Healthcare System, managing the Dallas Bazaar electronic store, and working as a shoe shiner at the Four Seasons Resort & Club in Las Colinas.

Active in researching and developing innovative care of spinal disorders, Dr. Won has many publications in various scientific journals and textbooks, and has lectured in all aspects of spinal disorders.

In addition, Dr. Won is known for his community involvement. He is co-founder of the Asian-American Medical Association, which provided education and promoted Asian-American healthcare issues. He also founded a mentorship program called Child International for adopted children from foreign countries, with the goal of educating them and their American families about their heritage and ethnic background.

Douglas Won, Outstanding Graduate (right), is congratulated by Trustee Barbara Cardwell.
