Reeves Named Outstanding Graduate

Melinda Griggs Reeves, a 1975 graduate of Nimitz, was honored as an Outstanding Graduate. She has served as principal of Decatur High School in Decatur, Texas for the past 11 years.

After graduating from Nimitz in 1975, Reeves attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in December 1977. She later obtained her Master of Arts in education from TCU in 1984.

Reeves taught kindergarten, first grade and fourth grade in Arlington ISD from 1977 to 1984. During the course of her teaching career, she earned additional responsibilities as a team leader and gained experience in areas such as curriculum and budgeting. Reeves then began the next phase of her career, serving as an assistant principal at the elementary, junior high and high school levels with Arlington between 1988 and 1996.

She was hired as principal of Decatur High in 1996 and has presided over the most successful period in that school’s history. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2001 and recognized as an Exemplary campus by the Texas Education Agency between 1999 and 2003. Decatur High was also designated by TEA as a Mentor School and Pathfinder School.

Reeves was named Outstanding Secondary Principal of the Year for 2003-2004 by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, and finished as a Top 3 national finalist in 2005 for Outstanding Secondary Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. She also was named Region 11 Principal of the Year in 2003.
