Geedy Honored as Teacher of the Month

Jennifer Geedy, fifth grade bilingual teacher at Townsell Elementary School, was honored as Teacher of the Month for August. A graduate of Brighton High School in Rochester, New York, Geedy earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and Spanish from Sunny Cortland College in Cortland, New York. She also spent time at the University of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain where she continued her education in Spanish as well as Buffalo State University in Buffalo, New York.

Geedy began teaching seventh and eighth grade special education in Buffalo, New York. She relocated to Dallas in 1996 where she taught at the John F. Kennedy Learning Center in Dallas ISD. Geedy moved to Irving ISD in 2003 and has spent the past four years in bilingual education at Townsell.

Lane Recognized as Employee of the Month

Todd Lane, grounds foreman at Facilities Services, was recognized as Employee of the Month for August. He began his career with Irving ISD in August 2005. Since accepting the challenge of leading the Grounds Section of Facilities Services, his area has maintained an exceptional response record to various landscaping needs throughout the district.

Lane spends time away from work with his wife and three daughters as well as supporting his church. His favorite hobby is fishing.

Barnes & Jackson Named Teachers of the Year

The names of the 2007-2008 IISD Teachers of the Year were announced. Chris Barnes, fifth grade science teacher at Elliott Elementary School last year (who is teaching at Lively Elementary School this year), and Greg Jackson, math teacher and Academic Decathlon head coach at Nimitz High School, were given plaques and congratulated by the Board of Trustees.

A formal recognition ceremony will be held at a special meeting of the trustees September 17 at Nimitz High School.

In Other Business, Trustees:

	Approved minutes of Noon Work Session and Regular Board Meeting on August 6, 2007 and Special Called Meeting on August 20, 2007.
	Approved financial statement for June 2007.
	Approved Resolution and Order #06-07-29 authorizing August amendment to the 2006-2007 budget.
	Approved Resolution and Order #06-07-30 approving supplements to the Irving ISD tax rolls.
	Approved Ordinance #06-07-04 accepting 2007 Irving ISD tax roll from Dallas Central Appraisal District, and declaring an emergency.
	Approved Ordinance #06-07-05 approving anticipated collection rate for the Tax Year 2007 and declaring an emergency.
	Approved auditing firm of Weaver & Tidwell LLP for the 2006-2007 fiscal year audit.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-173 of the IISD Board of Trustees calling certain outstanding bonds for redemption and resolving other matters related thereto. This permits the district to redeem $1,950,000 and $1,550,000 of its outstanding Variable Rate Unlimited Tax School Building Bonds, Series 2004-A and Series 2004-B, respectively prior to final maturity.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-153 accepting proposal for workers’ compensation excess insurance from Roach Howard Smith and Barton (RHSB), broker agency, with Midwest Employers Casualty Company as the insurance underwriter, at a cost not to exceed .0415 per $100 of payroll costs.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-174 approving CIGNA’s administrative services only agreement and Connecticut General Company’s stop loss contract related to the IISD Employee Health Care Plan.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-175 approving the change in math and science stipends from supplemental duty payments included in annual salary to stipend payments paid as special earnings.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-176 authorizing the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Council for History Education.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-177 approving an agreement with the University of North Texas. This is in relation to the Teaching American History federal grant.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-178 approving interlocal agreement for Region IV Education Service Center Safe Schools Project. This provides criminal background checks and, based on number of employees, results in a cost of $43,010.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-179 approving an agreement between Dallas County Community College District and Irving ISD for dual credit classes conducted at IISD high schools.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-180 approving board appointments to the Excellence Now Committee.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-181 for final payment application and closeout documentation for tennis court lighting at MacArthur High School.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-182 accepting proposal for visitor registry systems from Raptor Technologies at an initial cost of $58,054.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-183 designating temporary hazardous route for Lamar Middle School.
	Approved Resolution #06-07-184 adopting Board Policy FNA (Local) related to voluntary student expression.
	Approved Ordinance #06-07-06 approving and adopting the budget for 2007-2008 fiscal year; appropriating funds for each department, project and account; declaring an emergency and authorizing other matters related to the subject.
	Approved Ordinance #06-07-07 levying school district ad valorem taxes for the Irving Independent School District for the Fiscal Year 2007-2008 and Tax Year 2007 and for each year thereafter until otherwise provided; directing the assessment and collection thereof; and declaring an emergency.
	Approved Order #06-07-05 calling a bond election to be held within said district; making provisions for the conduct and the giving of notice of the election; and containing other provisions related thereto.
	Revised 2007-2008 school calendar to comport with new legislation (SB 1031 – Student Assessment).
	Endorsed trustees to serve on TASB Region 10, Positions B and D, TASB Board of Directors.
	Approved first reading and filing authorization of TASB Update 80 and other local board policies EEJB and EIE.
	Held public meeting to review and discuss the 2007-2008 budget and proposed tax rate.

Greg Jackson, IISD Secondary Teacher of the Year, received a plaque from the IISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Jack Singley.
