Trustees Recognize IISD JROTC Programs

During the regular meeting of the IISD Board of Trustees February 1, trustees recognized the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Programs hosted at Irving High School, MacArthur High School, and Nimitz High School.

IISD JROTC units include: Marine Corps at Irving High, Army at MacArthur, and Navy at Nimitz. Total JROTC enrollment is 512 high school students. Trustees also honored the programs at the three schools for their recent regional, state and national accomplishments.

United States Army JROTC was established with the National Defense Act of 1916. Under the provisions of the act, high schools were authorized the loan of federal military equipment and the assignment of active duty military personnel as instructors. The Vitalization Act of 1964 opened JROTC to the other armed services and replaced most of the active duty teachers with armed services retirees who worked for and were paid by the schools.
