District Installs New PIN
Reps IISD schools and departments have selected
their Public Information Network (PIN) representatives to assist the
Public Information Department during the school year. PIN reps are
responsible for coordinating news on their campuses and sending campus
or department news to the Public Information Department for publication
in the District Weekly, other IISD publications, or to attract
attention from local news media outlets.

Teachers of the Year Announced

The Irving ISD Teachers of the Year were announced at the Board of
Trustees meeting Monday. They will be formally recognized at a reception
and special board meeting September 19 at MacArthur High School. The
IISD Elementary Teacher of the Year is Gail Johnstone, first grade
bilingual teacher at Gilbert Elementary School. The IISD Secondary
Teacher of the Year is Gina Fletcher, instructional technology
specialist at de Zavala Middle School. Both teachers will compete for
the Region 10 Teacher of the Year honor which will be awarded at a
luncheon in Plano this week.
The board also recognized campus teachers of the year. They are: Amy

School, special education; Elizabeth Peery, Nimitz High School, science;

PTA Reps Visit Austin, Hosts Workshops
Forty PTA officers representing Irving ISD Council of PTAs joined
3,000 parents and educators in Austin for a record-breaking summer
leadership conference attendance.
Delegates from the council and Brown Elementary School, Elliott
Elementary School, de Zavala Middle School, Schulze Elementary School,
Thomas Haley Elementary School, Lamar Middle School, Lee Elementary
School, Johnston Elementary School, Houston Middle School, Nimitz High
School and Irving High School attended workshops on parenting,
networking, advocacy, health & safety, conflict resolution, and
leadership.
The Irving ISD council also hosted the Area 10 fall workshop at the
IISD Administration Building August 13.

Academy Program Lauded by Dallas Business
Journal
The Medical Studies program at The Academy of Irving ISD has been
named a finalist in the Dallas Business Journals 2005 Health
Care Heroes Awards. The program the largest career specialization at
the Academy provides challenging career field internships for seniors
and supports an extracurricular organization called HOSA (Health
Occupation Students of America) in which students take part in
medical-related workshops and competitions every year. With this
program, Irving ISD is helping to address the shortage of medical
professionals, and for that, the program was named one of 17 finalists
for the Health Care Heroes Awards. Winners of the awards will be
announced in a special Health Care Heroes issue of the Dallas
Business Journal September 9. The Academy program was nominated for
the award by IISD Partnerships In Education Coordinator Thelma Cantu.

de Zavala Teacher Meets With Guyanan President
Joshua P. Chowritmootoo, teacher at de Zavala Middle School and
former minister of the government of Guyana, recently visited his native
country and met with its president Bharrat Jagdeo. Chowritmootoo also
met with Robert Corbin, a member of parliament and former deputy prime
minister.

Nimitz High School principal Sam Bean resurrected
The Amazing Carnac while introducing new staff members on the first
day of Nimitz staff development at Austin Ranch. Nimitz has 37 new
teachers this year. District-wide, there are almost 500 new teachers
in IISD schools. |
