Student Earns All-State Honor
An IISD student was
named to All-State band recently. Kyle Roderick, euphonium player
from Nimitz High School, has been selected to participate in the Texas
All-State Band. His teacher is Perrin Smith.
All-State is the highest
level of recognition available to high school musicians in Texas.
Roderick will perform during the 2007 Texas Music Educators Association
(TMEA) convention February 14-17 in San Antonio.

ABC-TV to Visit Hanes Monday
An ABC-TV production
crew is scheduled to visit Hanes Elementary School Monday as a result of
a fan contest won by first grade teacher Jamye Wolff. She won ABC’s Fan
February Contest, which includes a trip for Wolff to visit the set of
ABC daytime drama General Hospital in Los Angeles.

As part of the contest,
General Hospital star Jason Thompson – who plays Dr. Patrick
Drake on the show – is scheduled to spend Monday morning with Wolff’s
class.
The contest was designed
to allow a fan and an actor to learn more about the workplaces of their
counterpart.
Outtakes from Wolff’s
and Thompson’s days at work are scheduled to appear in TV promos for
General Hospital the week of February 12.

Public Invited to Super Quiz
The
public is invited to attend the Super Quiz at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the
MacArthur High School Spectator Gym. It is annually the highlight of the
regional Academic Decathlon meet, which is being hosted this year by
Irving ISD.
The Super Quiz topic is
“An Introduction to Climatology.” The meet’s overall topic is “China and
Its Influence on the World.”
Irving High School,
MacArthur High School and Nimitz High School will compete with 10 other
area schools for the Region 9 title. Nimitz, the defending champion, has
won the regional title 16 of the past 19 years.
Teams will compete in 10
areas, including math, science, language/literature, art, music, and
economics. The competition also includes essay, speech and interview
components, as well as Super Quiz.

Technology Media Fair February 1
Irving
ISD will host its 2006-2007 Technology Media Fair on Thursday, February
1 at Bowie Middle School. The event runs from 6-7:30 p.m.
IISD students undertook
projects in the following categories: digitized video, digitized audio,
animation, digitally submitted photography, digital graphics, desktop
publishing, multimedia and website design.
Students have worked on
the projects since last fall. District winners will be highlighted at
the fair. For more information, visit

Students in most categories will be eligible to advance to the Texas
Computer Education Association (TCEA) state contest.

IAGT to Host Scholarship Program
The Irving Association
for Gifted & Talented (IAGT) will present a program on scholarship
opportunities at 7 p.m. Monday at the de Zavala Middle School cafeteria.
Deborah George, director
of IISD gifted & talented services, will lead parents and students
through the application process for scholarships through the Texas
Association of Gifted & Talented (TAGT).

BAE Systems Awards Grants for Math, Science
BAE
Systems, an established partner with Irving ISD, recently awarded two
grants to aid with math and science projects at the elementary and
middle school levels.
Austin Middle School
received a $7,200 grant from the company for an after-school math and
science program aimed at improving math and science scores for
approximately 80 sixth and seventh graders.
In addition, BAE Systems
provided a $4,500 grant to place two large data collection devices at
each elementary school campus. The project was initially funded by the
company last year through a $15,000 donation. More than 400 small data
collection devices were provided for elementary science students.
BAE Systems is an
international company with North American headquarters in Maryland. It
has an electronics and integrated solutions office located in Irving.

Keyes Staff Connects with Teacher Movie
For its campus work day
Tuesday, Keyes Elementary School faculty and staff took a field trip to
view the new film Freedom Writers, which tells the inspiring true
story of a teacher dedicated to making a connection with her students.
Teachers and staff were
given a writing assignment about the film and held a debriefing at the
school following the movie.

Nimitz Students Participate in Lions Club Contest
Nimitz High School
students Jessica Almendariz and Bonnie Newman participated recently in
an essay and speech contest sponsored by the Irving Noon-Day Lions Club.
Almendariz represented
the club with an essay on new innovations in diabetes treatment. She has
been selected for a scholarship, which will be awarded at the Lions Club
District Banquet scheduled for January 27.
Newman represented the
club with a speech on drug abuse titled “Just Saying No is Not Enough.”
She will compete in the finals of the speech competition, also scheduled
for January 27.
