Three Administrators
Named
Irving ISD
Superintendent Jack Singley has announced three appointments to the
central administrative staff.
José Villaseñor Jr. has
been named director of P-12 parent & student responsive counseling
services. He most recently served as coordinator for social services at
Plano ISD. Villaseñor holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from
Pontifical College Josephinum and a Master of Education in guidance and
counseling from the University of Texas-Pan American.
Paula Barnhouse has
been named director of P-16 parent & student academic & career
counseling services. She has worked in Irving ISD since 1976, most
recently as lead counselor at MacArthur High School. Barnhouse holds a
Bachelor of Science in secondary education from the University of Texas
and a Master of Education in counseling from the University of North
Texas.
Freddie Kendrick has
been named coordinator of staff development. She most recently served as
an educational consultant in certification at the Region 11 Education
Service Center. Kendrick holds a Bachelor of Science in education from
the University of Houston and a Master of Science in education from
Texas Wesleyan University.

Nevil, Marchant
Honored by ATPE
Judith Nevil, AP and
gifted & talented English teacher at Irving High School, has been chosen
by the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) as Secondary
Educator of the Year for Region 10.
In addition, Sherri
Marchant, instructional technology specialist at Irving High School, was
chosen as Special Services & Professional Support Educator of the Year
for Region 10.
Nevil and Marchant will
be honored at an upcoming meeting of Irving ATPE.

Spelling Champions
Advance to County Bee
Three Irving ISD
students recently earned the right to compete in the Dallas County
Spelling Bee when they won bees for their high school zones. The bees
were broadcast live on Irving Schools Television (ISTV).
The county bee will be
held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 27 at Barnes & Nobles Booksellers,
Lincoln Park, located at 7700 W. Northwest Hwy., Suite 300, in Dallas.
Winners at the county bee will advance to the regional bee March 17. The
national bee will be held May 30-31 in Washington, D.C.
The spelling champions
are listed below along with the second place finishers, who will serve
as alternates for the county bee.
Irving High School
Cluster: Karen Parks, a seventh grade student at de Zavala Middle
School (Runner-up: Laquita Caldwell, seventh grade, Crockett Middle
School)
MacArthur High School
Cluster: Chibueze Umeakuana, a sixth grade student at Travis Middle
School (Runner-up: Tammy Huang, seventh grade, Houston Middle School)
Nimitz High School

Country Musician to
Visit School
Country
music star Steve Azar is scheduled to visit the Project S.A.F.E.
after-school program at John Haley Elementary School on Thursday,
February 8.
Azar, whose hits
include “I
Don’t Have to be Me (’Til Monday)" and “Waitin’
on Joe,” is the opening act for Bob Seger’s concert in Dallas.
Project S.A.F.E. is a
product of a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, which funds
10 after-school programs in Irving ISD.
The program at John
Haley began last fall and serves approximately 75 students each day,
providing homework assistance, tutorials and academic enrichment. In
addition, students break into exciting recreational activities such as
robotics, cooking and origami.
Azar plans to view many
of the various program activities before he brings the participants
together for a few songs and discussion about what they like best about
after-school learning.
Azar’s visit at John
Haley is a collaboration with the Afterschool Alliance, a leading
national voice for after-school programs.

Business Exchange
Days Scheduled
The
Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the 11th
Annual Business Exchange Days event February 8-9 to benefit Irving ISD
high school juniors and seniors.
The event will be held
February 8 at Irving High School and MacArthur High School, and
February 8−9 at The Academy of IISD. This popular event gives students
the opportunity to hear from local business professionals about careers.

Barton Alumni Sought
for Celebration
Students who are alumni
of Barton Elementary School are encouraged to contact the school in
regards to Barton’s 50th birthday celebration, which will be held March
8. The school opened in the fall of 1956.
