Whiteman to Host ICE
Awards
The
seventh annual ICE (Irving Celebration of Excellence) Awards, set for
Thursday, March 1, will be hosted by Irving television personality
Catherine Whiteman. She is host of the popular programs About Towne
and Profiles on Irving Community Television Network (ICTN).
The event is being held
at MacArthur High School. A reception in the cafeteria will begin at
6:15 p.m., followed by the awards at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The event
is free and open to the public.
Whiteman is an
accomplished actress, singer, storyteller and historian, in addition to
her award-winning work as a television producer and host. She promises
to make the evening memorable with her warm and engaging personality.
The awards ceremony, the
closest thing to Oscar night in Irving, rewards outstanding achievements
by Irving ISD students and staff in six categories: Academics, Fine
Arts, Athletics/Physical Education, Community Service/Citizenship,
Special Campus/District, and Innovative Programs.
The Excellence Now
Committee, comprised of members from the Irving community, determined
the finalists and winners for the ICE Awards. To view the complete list

In addition, the
prestigious Golden Apple Awards, presented by the IISD Board of
Trustees, will be presented that evening. Golden Apples honor
individuals and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to
Irving ISD.

Rutledge Named
National Merit Finalist
Sarah-Naomi
Rutledge, a senior at MacArthur High School, has been named finalist in
the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Rutledge, who was named
semifinalist in September, is among the 15,000 students in the race for
$33 million worth of merit scholarships. Finalists were chosen from a
field of more than 16,000 semifinalists and 1.4 million entrants.
The process of selecting
8,200 merit scholarship winners is now underway as the National Merit
Scholarship Corporation soon will begin mailing scholarship offers to
winners.

Academy Hosts
College Summit with Hispanic MBAs
Irving ISD, in
association with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), held a
free College Summit at The Academy of IISD last Saturday.
The event featured
college representatives offering tips to students on college
preparation. Among the topics discussed were scholarships, financial
aid, and adjusting to college life. More than 200 students registered
for the event.
Created in 1988, NSHMBA exists to foster Hispanic leadership through
graduate management education and professional development. For more

Nimitz Choral
Students Advance to State Contest
Fifteen choral students
at Nimitz High School qualified for state following the solo and
ensemble contest held February 10 in Midlothian.
The
following students qualified for the state UIL contest scheduled for May
in Austin: Ofelia Carranza, Jennifer De La Fuente, Jackie Estes, Amanda
Garza, Len Harper, Cory Jones, Danielle Manka, Robert Martinez, Johana
Orellana, Christopher Ramirez, Anna Schuessler, Jason Solis, Gunnar
Tietge, Regina Torres, and Victoria Wiley.

49 Students Advance
to SkillsUSA State
Forty-nine IISD students
placed high enough January 26-27 at the SkillsUSA District 6 competition
in Waco to advance to the state meet in Corpus Christi March 28-31.
SkillsUSA is a national organization for students enrolled in training
programs for technical, skilled and service occupations. For a list of

to DECA State
Thirty-six students from
The Academy of Irving ISD, Irving High School and MacArthur High School placed in the District 7
competition for DECA, an association of marketing students, held
February 2-3. The students advanced to the state contest, which will be
held March 8-10 in Corpus Christi. For a list of students advancing to

Lewellen Wins
Employee of the Year
Harold
Lewellen, utility/equipment operator at Facilities Services, has been
honored by his fellow workers as Service Center Employee of the Year for
2006. He has been an employee of Irving ISD for 33 years.
The Service Center
Employee of the Year is chosen each spring by employees. Lewellen’s name
and photo will be displayed on a plaque in the Service Center lobby next
to other Employee of the Year winners.

Academy FCCLA
Students Advance
A delegation of students
and teachers from The Academy of IISD attended the FCCLA (Family, Career
& Community Leaders of America) regional conference February 8-10 in
Waco.
The following students
entered competitions and advanced to the FCCLA state meet in April:
Autumn Field, Lindsey Gillespie and Megan Howell, Applied Technology,
first; Amber Gill, JoNecia Light and Samuel Partida, Illustrated Talk,
first; Alicia Martinez, Sindy Perez and Amparo Ramirez, Chapter Service
Manual, second; Erica Castillo, Mayra Salazar and Ana Mora, Illustrated
Talk, third; and Magdalena Rubio, Maria Sanchez and Alejandra Vazquez,
Chapter Service Display, fifth.
In
addition, Academy student Joseph Lees was elected Region 3 president for
the 2007-2008 school year.

MacArthur Partners
with Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement of
Dallas has invited MacArthur High School to participate in an
international pilot program. Citigroup has partnered with Junior
Achievement Worldwide to create a new high school curriculum called “JA
Banks in Action.”
MacArthur and another
area school will participate in the eight-week pilot program in which
students have the chance to win college savings bonds. Students will
learn about the history and operations of banking. Citigroup will
provide volunteers for the program.
Participating classes at
MacArthur are taught by Dee Dee Jones, Maliou Parent and Kirby Shelton.

Lamar Hosts Kickstart
Extravaganza
Lamar Middle School
hosted a Kickstart martial arts extravaganza February 3. Lamar, Austin
and de Zavala middle schools participate in the program, which is a
program aimed at providing children access to karate classes that they
might not be able to afford otherwise. It was originally started by
Chuck Norris in 1992.

Day Camp for
Asthmatic Children
A free day camp for
children with asthma is scheduled for 8 a.m.-4 p.m. March 13 at Lively
Elementary School. The camp, for ages 8-12, will teach children about
managing their asthma in a fun environment. For more information and to

T-shirt, fannie pack, peak flow meter, and aerochamber.
