ICE Awards Honor
Excellence
Irving
ISD held its seventh annual ICE Awards ceremony Thursday at MacArthur
High School. Twenty schools in 18 categories won awards. Irving
television personality Catherine Whiteman hosted the show.
In the Academics
category, the winning schools were Britain Elementary School, Crockett
Middle School, Houston Middle School, and MacArthur High School. In the
Fine Arts category, the winners were Barton Elementary School, Lamar
Middle School, and Nimitz High School.
In the Athletics &
Physical Education category, the winners were Stipes Elementary School,
Travis Middle School, and Irving High School. In the Community
Service/Citizenship category, the winners were Brandenburg Elementary
School, Lamar Middle School, and The Academy of IISD.
In the Special
Campus/District category, the winners were Hanes Elementary School, de
Zavala Middle School, and Irving High School. In the Innovative Programs
category, the winners were Farine Elementary School, Houston Middle
School, Irving High School, and Union Bower Center for Learning.

In addition, the IISD
Board of Trustees presented its prestigious Golden Apple Awards honoring
individuals and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to
IISD. Two businesses and one individual were honored this year.
Irving Rotary Club and
Baylor Medical Center at Irving received the business awards. The Rotary
Club was recognized for its volunteer reader program at Schulze
Elementary School. Baylor received praise for its support of The
Academy’s dental studies program.
Bob Harper received the
individual award. He was honored for his volunteer efforts on the
district and campus levels, as well as his role in getting others
involved in volunteering.
The ICE Awards will be
replayed at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Irving Community Television (ICTN),
which can be viewed on Time Warner Cable Channel 16 and Verizon FiOS
Channel 30.
Irving Schools
Television (ISTV) will replay the show at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and
10:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday beginning March 16.
ISTV can be viewed on Time Warner Cable Channel 98 and Verizon FiOS
Channel 33.

Travis Student Second
at County Bee

Umeakuana |
Chibueze Umeakuana,
sixth grader at Travis Middle School, was first runner-up in the Dallas
County Spelling Bee held February 27. He is two-time champion of the
MacArthur High School cluster. If the county winner cannot compete in
the regional bee, scheduled for March 17, Umeakuana will compete
instead.
The other cluster
winners – Caitlin McAlister of Schulze Elementary School and Karen Parks
of de Zavala Middle School – also represented Irving ISD at the county
bee.

Robinson Finalist For
TASBO Award

Judyann
Robinson |
Judyann Robinson, risk
manager at Irving ISD, was recently named a finalist for the 2007
Commitment to Excellence Award presented by the Texas Association of
School Business Officials (TASBO).
The award is the highest
honor bestowed on TASBO members by their peers. Robinson joined IISD
last year and previously served in risk management for Mesquite ISD. She
is a past chairperson of the TASBO Risk Management Research Committee.

Good Receives Best
Buy Award
Good Elementary School
has received a $2,500 Best Buy Teach Award for integrating technology
into the curriculum. The application, submitted by music teacher Frances
Rinehart, focused on the creation of musical creativity centers in the
classroom through computer hardware upgrades and other enhancements.

Spring Break Schedule
Irving ISD schools and
offices will be closed for Spring Break, March 12-16. The IISD Tax
Office, however, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m. to 3
p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and closed Thursday and Friday.
Due
to Spring Break, the District Weekly will not be published next
week. The next issue of the newsletter will be published Wednesday,
March 21.

Health Fair Scheduled
for March 24
Free health screenings
will be offered during a Health Fair scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, March 24 at Irving High School. The public is invited to
attend.

Students Perform Well
in Solo & Ensemble
It has been a busy
season for IISD students participating in regional music contests. Bowie
Middle School had 30 students earn superior ratings and 27 students earn
excellent ratings at their solo and ensemble contest. Nineteen students
at MacArthur High School and 23 students at Irving High School qualified
to advance to state following the solo and ensemble competition.
Twenty-one students at Travis Middle School received superior ratings at
their solo and ensemble contest.

Athletes of
the Month
The Irving ISD Athletes
of the Month for March are Kelvin Brent and Yesenia Ochoa, both of
MacArthur High School.

Yesenia Ochoa |
Brent is a member of the
MacArthur track and field team. He won the 100 meter dash at Cedar Hill
and is a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that won first at Cedar
Hill.
Ochoa, a gymnast at
MacArthur, has first-place finishes in the vault, uneven bars, floor
exercise and all-around, as well as a second place finish in the balance
beam.

PTA Council Reports
Hours
The IISD Council of PTAs
reports a total of 29,042.25 volunteer service hours during the month of
January. Elementary schools totaled 12,540.5, middle schools totaled
7,229.75, high schools totaled 7,927.5, and Clifton Early Childhood
School totaled 1,334.5. Top performing PTA units were Elliott Elementary
School, Crockett Middle School, and Nimitz High School.

Asthmatic Day Camp
A free day camp for
children with asthma is scheduled for 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Lively
Elementary School. The camp, for ages 8-12, will teach children about
managing their asthma in a fun environment. For more information and to

Live Museum at Davis
Fourth
and fifth graders at Davis Elementary School participated in a Live
Museum in recognition of Black History Month. Students chose outstanding
African Americans, such as Muhammad Ali, to represent.

Molar Man at Lively
Lively
Elementary School students in grades kindergarten through second enjoyed
a visit recently from Molar Man as part of Dental Health Month. He
talked to students about good dental health and how they should take
care of their teeth each day.
