IISD Receives High Praise for Nutrition

Irving ISD received high praise from the state's top agriculture official during a ceremony March 7 to commemorate the USDA Team Nutrition Silver School Award won by Lee Elementary School and IISD Food Service.

Todd Staples, commissioner of the Texas Department of Agriculture, congratulated Lee for becoming the first school in Texas to receive this designation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through its HealthierUS Schools Challenge program.

To receive the award, Lee and Food Service submitted more than 50 pages of information in support of the school's commitment to healthy students and nutritious meals. The award is based on three criteria: nutrition and health education, active physical education, and nutrition levels of school food.

Lee and Food Service are currently working on an application for the higher-level Gold School designation.

Other attendees included: Steve Savage, USDA Food & Nutrition Service communications and government affairs director; USDA Southwest Region Administrator Bill Ludwig; Superintendent Jack Singley; Board of Trustees President Randy Stipes and other trustees; and Chris Wallace, president and CEO of the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce.

Barton Celebrates 50th Birthday

Barton Elementary School, which opened in the fall of 1956, held a 50th birthday celebration March 8 during Texas Public Schools Week, in conjunction with the school's open house.

During his remarks, Superintendent Jack Singley expressed his respect for school namesake Lee Bose Barton and former principal C.R. Clodfelter. Barton, who previously owned the land where the school is located, served three decades on the school board in his community. Clodfelter was a key figure in establishing the school's legacy while serving as principal from 1960 to 1972.

Many alumni of Barton attended the event. Dallas County District Court Judge Lana Rolf McDaniel shared her memories of attending the school. Dallas Cowboys running back and Irving High graduate Tyson Thompson also attended, reuniting with his kindergarten teacher, Denise Schuster.

Randy Stipes, IISD Board of Trustees president, provided welcoming remarks, while Irving Mayor Herbert Gears presented a city proclamation in honor of Barton's birthday.
