Students Advance to UIL Regional
Students
from Irving High School, MacArthur High School, and Nimitz High School
competed March 23-24 in the District 7-5A UIL Academic Meet at Trinity
High School in Euless. In team events, MacArthur took first place in
literary criticism, cross examination debate and speech, while Nimitz
took first in social studies. Overall, MacArthur finished second with
352 points and Nimitz was third with 198 points. South Grand Prairie won
the meet with 477 points.
In
individual events, the following students advanced to regional
competition, set for April 13-14 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock:
Kevin Itty and Ronal Rivera from Irving High; Tarique Rahman, Chris
Palmer, Princy George, Crysta Vera, Rosa Gomez, Tausiq Ahmed, Adaobi
Anyiwo, Sarah-Naomi Rutledge, Claire Gutowski, Samantha Hess, Nathan
Bakos, Charles Wadsworth, Dylan Cowart, Shane Byrne, and Lionchelle
Williams from MacArthur; Idiculla Suijith, Jafferji Murtaza, Jaclyn Le,
Jeremiah Glenn, Tu Anh Dinh, Joseph Mathew, and Harrison Cohen from
Nimitz.

MacArthur, Nimitz Advance in One-Act Play
Last weekend, Nimitz High School hosted the District 7 One-Act Play
Contest, with MacArthur High School and Nimitz each advancing to the
area competition Saturday in Coppell.
Nimitz advanced with
the play And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson, while MacArthur
advanced with Confederate Letters. Each school amassed 40 points,
ahead of area alternate South Grand Prairie.
Travis Ponikiewski of
MacArthur won best actor honors for the competition while Kaycee
Reininger of Nimitz won best actress honors. The all-star cast included
Elise Gentry and Trey Reynolds of MacArthur, and Josh Childs and
Stephanie Stockton of Nimitz. Earning honorable mention were Raven
Garcia and Tre Turner of MacArthur, and Laura Masterson and Chris
Ramirez of Nimitz.

Reminder: April 9 is Make-Up Day
The Board of Trustees and the superintendent agreed to designate Monday,
April 9 as the make-up day for the school day missed January 17 due to
bad weather.
The IISD school calendar, adopted by the trustees, lists April 9 and
May 28 as weather days that can be used to make up for bad weather
closings. There have been no additional weather closings, so May 28
remains on the calendar as a student/teacher holiday.

Athletes of the Month
The Irving ISD Athletes of the Month for April are Austin Christenberry
of Nimitz High School and Melissa Resecker of Irving High School.

Christenberry, a junior, was first team All-District in mixed doubles
and second team All-District in singles last fall. This spring, he is
undefeated so far in singles and doubles, and shares the city
championship in mixed doubles with MinYoung Kang. Christenberry is also
active in academic pursuits, including as a member of Nimitz Academic
Decathlon Team.
Resecker, a senior, is
a three-year varsity starter for Irving High softball. She was second
last year in batting average and fielding, and is again among the
leaders in each category so far this year. Resecker, who is president of
the National Honor Society, is in the top five of her graduating class
and participates in various community service activities.

IISD Hires New Internal Auditor
Irving ISD recently hired Kimberlyee Chappell in the central
administration role of internal auditor. She replaces Jan Arrington, who
became director of business operations for IISD. Chappell previously
served as an audit supervisor in audit services for Dallas ISD and has
also served in auditing, finance and accounting capacities for
Richardson ISD and the City of Dallas. She holds a Master of Science and
a Bachelor of Science, both in accounting, from the University of North
Texas. Chappell is a certified internal auditor and certified
governmental auditing professional. In her duties, she reports to the
IISD Board of Trustees.

May 4 Deadline for DigiGirlz
Microsoft
is scheduled to host DigiGirlz High Tech Camp at its Las Colinas
location August 1−2. The mission is to introduce girls in grades 9−12
to the many career fields offered within the high tech industry. The
two-day camp is free.
Space is limited. The

Screening Mammograms This Month
The Irving Women’s Imaging Center is providing screening mammograms for
IISD employees and covered dependents in April. Mammograms are free for
those who are enrolled in Cigna Base OAP, Cigna Buy Up OAP or Cigna OAP
Plus and those who are 40 or older. Those not covered by an IISD
healthcare program can receive a screening mammogram for $125, payable
at time of registration. For an appointment, call 972.579.4333 to
schedule a time and specify your preferred location of Irving or
Coppell.

Retirement Seminar May 16
For those contemplating retirement in the next three years, a retirement
planning seminar sponsored by the Region 10 Education Service Center
will be held at 7 p.m. May 16 in Richardson. The meeting will be at the

Nimitz Choirs Perform
Well
The Nimitz High
School varsity mixed and treble choirs participated in the UIL concert/
sight-reading contest in Waxahachie March 29. The mixed varsity received
a Superior rating in concert and an Excellent rating in sight-reading,
while the varsity treble received an Excellent rating in concert and
sight-reading.

Irving ISD Receives
AED Award
In
recognition of Irving ISD’s support, the Texas Association of School
Boards (TASB) Risk Management Fund recently awarded an automated
external defibrillator (AED) to the district. AEDs are life-saving
devices that increase the chance of survival for victims of cardiac
arrest. Dr. Neil Dugger, assistant superintendent for personnel and
administration (left), and Judyann Robinson, IISD risk manager (center),
accepted the award from Kim Webb with the underwriting and marketing
division, Dallas region, of the TASB Risk Management Fund.
