Glenn Invited to World Scholar’s Cup

Nimitz High School senior Jeremiah Glenn has been invited to participate May 26-27 in the 2007 finals of the World Scholar’s Cup in Seoul, South Korea. Academic decathletes from the United States will compete against students from multiple countries.

Students will compete in teams of three for both individual and team awards. American students will be assigned teams based on geographical proximity before departing for South Korea. Events will include essay, debate, and a scholar’s quiz covering economics, math, history, literature and science.

Trustee Candidates Interviewed

The Irving ISD Public Information Department offered all candidates in the May 12 Irving ISD Trustee election the opportunity to be featured on Irving Schools Television (ISTV) and IISD website through short interviews.

The interviews can be viewed on ISTV via Time Warner Cable Channel 98 and Verizon FiOS Channel 33 through May 11. The daily broadcast times are 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The interviews can also be viewed through the IISD website at www.irvingisd.net/istv.

12 Students Place at State Media Fair

Results have been announced in the annual State Media Fair sponsored by the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA).   Twelve IISD students placed in the competition.

First place winners are:

Sara Roman, Lee Elementary School, Digital Graphics – Original Illustrated Art, Single Entry (3-5)

Second place winners are:

Middle Schoolers Honored in Duke Program

Seventeen IISD middle school students have been awarded State Recognition for their participation in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). Joel Sam of Lamar Middle School has also received Grand Recognition.

TIP identifies academically talented seventh graders based on standardized test scores. Candidates complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Assessment college entrance exam. The program then provides participants with comparative information concerning their academic abilities and resources for unique educational opportunities.

The State Recognition is awarded to students who scored in the top 25 percent on their tests, while Grand Recognition is awarded to those who scored in the top 2 percent. The state-recognized students will be honored at ceremonies May 30-31 at the University of North Texas and Texas Christian University.

The other state-recognized students are: Yerelhdi Jaimes, Austin Middle School; Ivan Maristan, Maribel Mendoza, and Ashley Ortiz, Bowie Middle School; Amanda Huerta, Alvina Katemauswa, Daniel Park, and Craig Young, Crockett Middle School; Diana Barraza, Tambra Bonds, and Kaylee Lovvorn, de Zavala Middle School; Trey Masters, Saul Membreno, and Carly Taylor, Lamar; and David Ashenhart and Cooper Latimer, Travis Middle School.

Music Students Rate at Bowie, Lamar, Travis

IISD middle school music students have been busy recently at various competitions. At the UIL competition April 4-5, Bowie Middle School fielded three bands – Seventh Grade Concert, Seventh Grade Symphonic and Eighth Grade Honors – that earned Superior ratings in sight-reading.

The Varsity Girls Choir at Lamar Middle School and the Advanced Choir at Travis Middle School each earned a Sweepstakes rating during the UIL choral competition held recently at Greiner Middle School of Dallas ISD. A Sweepstakes rating means that six judges gave the choir a Superior rating for their concert and sight-reading performances at the contest.

New K-5 Registration Set to Begin May 1

Elementary students who are new to Irving ISD may register for the 2007-2008 school year beginning May 1.  Students who will be in grades K-5 may register Monday through Friday from May 1-18 at their local school between 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Parents should bring updated immunization records, the student’s birth certificate, proof of residence (such as apartment lease or utility bill), and the student’s Social Security card.

Another registration period for new elementary students will take place at the schools August 13-17 from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The first day of school for the 2007-2008 school year is August 27.

IISD Teacher Job Fair Scheduled for May 5

Irving ISD will hold a Teacher Job Fair from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 5 at the Academy. Applicants should bring copies of their résumé, current college transcripts, and teaching certificate or college letter of anticipated completion. Principals will be present to conduct interviews for the 2007-2008 school year.

Representatives from various alternative education programs also will be present. In addition, an alternative education seminar will be held. No preregistration is required. Applicants may submit an electronic application at www.irvingisd.net/hr.htm

Chamber Honors Nimitz Decathletes
During the Board of Trustees meeting Monday, the Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce and its Public Education Task Force presented $1,000 scholarships to each Nimitz High School team member in honor of their performance in Texas Academic Decathlon. Presenting the scholarships were Chris Wallace, president and CEO of the Chamber, and Lisa Sturgeon, who is chairwoman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The scholarships were underwritten by Allstate, Aviall, Microsoft and NEC America. The Academic Decathlon teams from all four high schools were honored by the board Monday..

Targeting TEKS at Elliott
As part of an effort to target areas of TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills), students at Elliott Elementary School used HOBO data loggers to measure temperature changes and graph the results. The data loggers were funded through contributions from BAE Systems.

Educators Support Strong Libraries
John Ringhauser and Linda Willett, principals of Davis and Townsell, respectively, attended the Strong Libraries Strong Scores Conference April 12, 2007, in San Antonio in conjunction with the Texas Library Association Conference. Participants in the conference were recommended by their librarians, and selected from nominees across the state to attend. Pictured (from left) are Ringhauser, Bea Cochran, Willett and Skye Bryant.

Science ‘Geeks’ at Schulze
Science teachers at Schulze Elementary School have taken the role of science “geeks” as part of a weekly Science Camp for fifth graders to reinforce science knowledge.

TAKS Rally at John Haley
Students at John Haley Elementary School participated in a TAKS Rally last Friday, which included a skit illustrating what to do – and what not to do – in preparation for the TAKS exams.

Fear Factor at Townley
As part of their TAKS Rally on Monday, students at Townley Elementary School were treated to a Fear Factor program in which teachers ate unappetizing food to energize students for the TAKS exams this week.
