Middle Schoolers Honored in Duke Program

Joel Sam |
Seventeen IISD middle school students have been awarded State
Recognition for their participation in the Duke University Talent
Identification Program (TIP). Joel Sam of Lamar Middle School has also
received Grand Recognition.
TIP identifies academically talented seventh graders based on
standardized test scores. Candidates complete either the SAT Reasoning
Test or ACT Assessment college entrance exam. The program then provides
participants with comparative information concerning their academic
abilities and resources for unique educational opportunities.
The State Recognition is awarded to students who scored in the top 25
percent on their tests, while Grand Recognition is awarded to those who
scored in the top 2 percent. The state-recognized students will be
honored at ceremonies May 30-31 at the University of North Texas and
Texas Christian University.
The other state-recognized students are: Yerelhdi Jaimes, Austin Middle
School; Ivan Maristan, Maribel Mendoza, and Ashley Ortiz, Bowie Middle

Music Students Rate at Bowie, Lamar, Travis
IISD middle school music students have been busy recently at various
competitions. At the UIL competition April 4-5, Bowie Middle School
fielded three bands – Seventh Grade Concert, Seventh Grade Symphonic and
Eighth Grade Honors – that earned Superior ratings in sight-reading.
The Varsity Girls Choir at Lamar Middle School and the Advanced Choir at
Travis Middle School each earned a Sweepstakes rating during the UIL
choral competition held recently at Greiner Middle School of Dallas ISD.
