IISD Student Wins VASE Gold Seal

Robert Cunningham of The Academy of IISD won a prestigious Gold Seal during the Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) held April 13-14 in Houston. From approximately 2,000 entries in the state contest, his work – a ceramic piece – was one of less than 100 pieces selected as the best in Texas. He also won a state medal.

Eight other IISD students won state medals with a score of 4. Ivan Alonso of MacArthur High School won two medals. Other IISD medalists were: Tiffany Burts and Irene Sosa, Irving High School; Mariah Davis, Christen Glenn, and Ann Stone, MacArthur; Ricardo Gonzalez, Nimitz High School; and Alex Revier, The Academy.

Other students who advanced to the state competition were: Jesus Macias, Kelsey Kontact, and Dayanne Verbena, Irving High; Jesus Castillo, Nimitz; and Chris Cardona and Sawsan Hajmahmoud, The Academy.

Macias’ work was selected by the mayor of Sunnybrook to appear in that city’s newspaper as the showcase work for the VASE competition.

Teacher Job Fair Scheduled for May 5

Irving ISD will hold a Teacher Job Fair from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at The Academy of IISD. Applicants should bring copies of their résumé, current college transcripts, and teaching certificate or college letter of anticipated completion.

Principals will be present to conduct interviews for the 2007-2008 school year. Representatives from various alternative education programs also will be present. In addition, an alternative education seminar will be held.

No preregistration is required. Applicants may submit an electronic application at www.irvingisd.net/hr.htm.

PreK Informational Meetings May 10

Informational meetings on prekindergarten for the 2007-2008 school year will be held at 5:30 p.m. May 10 at the three Irving ISD early childhood schools – Clifton, Kinkeade and Pierce.

These meetings are for parents to obtain information regarding the upcoming school year. Please note that no student registration will take place at these meetings.

Registration dates for early childhood schools are as follows:

August 6

Pierce Early Childhood School

August 7

Clifton Early Childhood School

August 8

Kinkeade Early Childhood School

Registration will take place from 8 a.m.- 6:30 p.m. on these days at Austin Middle School.

To register, students must be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2007, and meet income, language, homeless and/or military dependency requirements.

Early Voting Begins Monday for Election

Early voting by personal appearance will begin Monday and continues through May 8 for the May 12 Irving ISD Trustee election. Ballots for early voting may be cast at Irving City Hall, Irving Arts Center, and Dallas County Records Building as follows:

April 30-May 5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

May 6, 1-6 p.m.

May 7-8, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

      A list of polling places for voting on May 12 is available on the IISD website at:
        www.irvingisd.net/ppage/election_information.htm.

Candidate interviews can be viewed on the website and on Irving Schools Television (ISTV) via Time Warner Cable Channel 98 and Verizon FiOS Channel 33 through May 11. They are broadcast daily at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Academy Mentorship Showcase May 2

Spring presentations for The Academy of IISD’s Independent Study Mentorship Program will be conducted May 2 at the school. Presentations will be made in two sessions, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. An awards reception will be held at 8:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The program is a research-based, advanced-level course for high school juniors and seniors to explore an area of study of their choosing. Because of increasing student participation, the Academy is hosting its own showcase this year. Twenty-two students will be presenting.

Recycling Program Still Going Strong

Irving ISD’s recycling program has paid out approximately $4,300 this school year to schools from recycled paper and aluminum cans. During the month of March, IISD recycled more than 193,000 pounds of material, which is the equivalent to 96.2 tons.

FCCLA Academy Students Place at State Contest

Six students from The Academy of IISD placed at the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state conference held April 12-14 in Dallas.

Alicia Martinez, Amparo Ramirez, and Sindy Perez placed second in Chapter Service Manual, while Lindsey Gillespie, Autumn Field, and Megan Howell placed third in Applied Technology. Gillespie, Field and Howell also earned $500 scholarships from Johnson & Wales University.

In addition, Academy student Joseph Lees was installed as Region 3 president for the 2007-2008 school year.

Week of the Young Child at Clifton

Clifton Early Childhood School has scheduled a series of activities this week in observance of Week of the Young Child. Nationally, Week of the Young Child is promoted through the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Activities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday with Irving Mayor Herbert Gears and a Nutrition Focus Day on Tuesday. Remaining activities for the week include Literary Focus Day on Wednesday, Health Focus Day on Thursday, and Fitness Focus Day on Friday.

Vikas Show This Weekend at Nimitz

The annual Spring Show by the Nimitz High School Vikas will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the auditorium. This year's show is titled Lights! Camera! Action!

Tickets will be sold at the door for $8. Guest performers include the Mini Vikas, Nimitz dance classes, Ballet Folklorico, Winter Guard, and Falcon Dancers from Farine Elementary School.

Irving High to Present Footloose

Irving High School’s Performing Arts Department will present its spring musical, Footloose, at 7 p.m. May 2-4 at the auditorium. It is based on the 1998 Broadway musical, which was adapted from the popular 1984 film of the same name.

Smart Board Project at Kinkeade

Myrna Baker, principal at Kinkeade Early Childhood School, recently completed a TechFusion project by working with students on logic problems using the Smart Board. Nursery rhymes, colors and animals were the focus of the lesson.

Using the American Idol theme, teachers and support staff at Keyes Elementary School reinforced TAKS strategies during a pep rally prior to TAKS testing.

Fun Run at Stipes
Stipes Elementary School held its first Fun Run/Walk on Saturday April 21. Awards were presented for each grade level, and each participant received a commemorative dog tag. Stipes plans to continue this event each year as a way to connect with the school, neighborhood and alumni community.

Earth Day at Brown
Blair Habuda, vice president of energy accounting for Commerce Energy, demonstrated to kindergarteners how wind energy is created during an Earth Day assembly last Friday at Brown Elementary School. Commerce Energy is an electric provider that specializes in wind energy.

Nimitz German Students at TCU
The German students of Nimitz High School attended the all-day Deutscher Samstag event April 21 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The day included activities such as speaking, art, trivia games and food sampling, all in an immersion of German language and culture.

Mac DECA Winners
MacArthur High School principal Cynthia Bean (center) congratulated students Lupe Resendez (left) and Zackary McDowell on advancing to the International DECA Leadership Conference April 28-May 2 in Orlando, Florida. Five students from The Academy of IISD – Emma Graziani, Morgan Hudgins, Chantal Jarayanpour, Ashley Mora, and Allyson Parker – also advanced to the international conference.

TAKS Rally at Bowie
To kick off the recent TAKS testing week, Bowie Middle School held a pep rally that featured a light-hearted wrestling theme pitting the Bowie Wrestling Federation (BWF) against Ultimate TAKS Smackdown.

Career Prep Classes Visit Northwood
The combined career preparation classes at Irving High School recently visited the Cedar Hill campus of Northwood University, a business school for aspiring business professionals. Career preparation teachers are Lisa Lobb, Jennifer Kinnan, and Tracy Womble.

Bottle Bug at Keyes
As part of recent Earth Day activities to emphasize recycling, first grade teachers at Keyes Elementary School created a “bottle bug” using more than 900 recycled laundry bottles. Most of bottles were collected from Irving homes and laundromats.

Track Champs at Bowie
The seventh grade track team at Bowie Middle School recently won the city championship by 59 points.
