Vals, Sals to Speak at Graduation

The valedictorians and salutatorians for the four Irving ISD high schools will make their traditional speeches at graduation ceremonies Friday and Saturday.

Valedictorians and salutatorians are: Adrian Gallegos and Alis Bonda, Irving High School; Princy George and Cody Wero, MacArthur High School; Khan-Doan Hoang and Pinky Patel, Nimitz High School; and Sarah Valente and Bianca Guerrero, The Academy of IISD.

For the third consecutive year, the valedictorian and salutatorian from each high school received a laptop computer courtesy of Dell Computer.

Graduation is set at Potter’s House Event Center in southwest Dallas. Nimitz graduation is at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by Academy graduation at 7:30 p.m. MacArthur graduation is at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by Irving High graduation at 2 p.m.

Irving Schools Foundation Fellows

The Irving Schools Foundation (ISF) held its 2007 Fellows luncheon reception Wednesday honoring 21 Fellows as their names were inscribed on the Perpetual Giving Tree sculpture at the Administration Building.

Joy Apple, Debbie Burden, Connie Dunn, Four Seasons Resort and Club at Dallas Las Colinas, Ruben Franco, Marty French, Maura Gast, Judy and Roger Hill, Sharon Isringhaus, Helma Mazon, John Mazon, Nita Patrick, Wayne Pfaff, Almarie and J.W. Schepf, Patty and Charles Schmidt, Barbara and Brock Scott, Carla Smith, Thora Starke, Dr. Jason Watkins, and Carolyn Wilson were presented with engraved copper leaves.

The reception also honored the Lauralee Hubbard Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded in April for the first time at the Breakfast with the Stars event. This scholarship was established last year in memory of Lauralee Hubbard, mother of Irving Mayor Herbert Gears.

The luncheon reception was catered by Aspen Catering with donations from Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and ISF Board members.

State Solo/Ensemble Results

Six IISD choral students – Devon Albert, Jonathan Flores, and Christina Scrivner of Irving High School, and Chris Ramirez, Jason Solis, and Victoria Wiley of Nimitz High School – received Superior ratings at the state solo/ensemble competition last weekend in Austin.

Hanes Wins Geography Bee, Townley Finishes Second

The Geography Bee Team from Hanes Elementary School won the district competition held recently at MacArthur. Townley Elementary School earned second place. This year’s competition included 15 elementary schools, with each team composed of fourth and/or fifth graders. Winners received special medals and a world atlas.

Athletes of the Month

The Irving ISD Athletes of the Month for June are Kristal Juarez of Irving High School and Dexter Richmond of Nimitz High School.

Dexter Richmond

Juarez, a senior, competes on the Irving High Girls Track Team and recently won second place at the state meet in the Class 5A 400 meters event. During the year, she ran a season-best time of 56.36 seconds in the 400 meters and anchored the relay team, which won fourth at state. Juarez is being recruited by the University of Houston, Baylor and several other universities.

Richmond, a sophomore, is a member of the Nimitz Boys Track Team and qualified for regional competition in four different events, including the long jump. He scored points at every track meet except for one this season. Richmond, an honors student at Nimitz, is expected to be a leader on the 2008 team.

IISD Recycling Results

Logo:  Irving ISD RecyclingLee Elementary School won first place in IISD’s paper recycling contest co-sponsored by Abitibi Consolidated and Keep Irving Beautiful. Lee collected 76,874 pounds, followed by Lively Elementary School with 66,590 pounds. MacArthur and Nimitz high schools each exceeded 60,000 pounds. IISD “Green” teachers also were recognized recently during a reception at the Administration Building in which trophies and door prizes were presented.

Training Offered to Immigrant Parents

The Irving ISD Bilingual/ESL/Migrant Department has been offering a training program for immigrant parents called Embajadores de la Comunidad (Ambassadors to the Community) that may be expanded in the next school year.

The training, provided at the Irving ISD Parent & Community Center at 820 O’Connor Road, provides information on the American educational system that is specific to IISD. The program was originally developed at the University of Texas at Arlington and initially used at Nimitz High School through teacher Netanya Even.

Secondary Summer School Begins June 13

Logo:  Summer School - Summer CampsThe summer school program for senior high school students runs from June 13 through July 26 at Irving High School. Summer school graduation is scheduled for August 14. Holidays will be observed July 3-4.

Students may register from 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. June 11 at Irving High in the main foyer and cafeteria. Students will register for both semesters. Late registration will be from 2-5 p.m. June 12 at the same location. Tuition must be paid in full at time of registration. The last day for refunds is June 19.

For IISD students, tuition is $135 for half-credit courses and $270 for full-credit courses. For non-district students, tuition is $200 for half-credit courses and $400 for full-credit courses.

ISF Awards $2,880 in Teacher Enrichment Grants

The Irving Schools Foundation (ISF) has awarded $2,880 in Teacher Enrichment Grants to 14 teachers. The grants provide teachers with professional development opportunities to attend seminars and workshops. Applications from teachers are due by the 10th of each month. Grants are awarded up to $500 each.

Summer Feeding Program Available

The IISD Food Service Department is offering a summer feeding program for everyone between the ages of 1 and 18. They will be entitled to free meals served at any of the 28 school sites that are open for summer. Please call the school sites to find out the proper entrance. Health Plan Design, Rates Remain the Same for 2007-2008

Employee health plan design and rates will remain the same for the 2007-2008 school year. Dental HMO will rise slightly, while dental PPO and vision rates will remain the same. For convenience, a debit card will be offered to participants who enroll in medical spending accounts. Disability insurance will be offered as a guaranteed issue to interested employees, with no medical questions required.

Field Day at Stipes
Students, parents and teachers at Stipes Elementary School enjoyed outdoor activities during Field Day held recently.

Path to Scholarships
Irving ISD hosted Path to Scholarships training May 15-17 for teachers and counselors. It featured June McBride, founder and author of the scholarship and dropout prevention program called Path to Scholarships. The program focuses on helping students find ways of obtaining scholarships.

Irving Children’s Chorus at Sandy Lake
The Irving Children’s Chorus performed May 19 during the Sandy Lake Music Fun Fest, earning a First Division rating from all judges. The chorus, directed by Linda Hoffman of Stipes Elementary School, is composed of students from 15 elementary schools.

Camp Skeeter at Johnston
Third graders in Kitty Struchen’s class at Johnston Elementary School recently completed a unit called Camp Skeeter, which centers around a summer camp theme.

Ballet Folklorico at Gilbert
Ballet Folklorico dancers at Gilbert Elementary School have met after school throughout the year and have been asked to perform with dancers at Nimitz High School in October.

Culture Celebration at Davis
Family and friends gathered May 29 at Davis Elementary School to celebrate a diversity of cultures. The event, called Celebration of the Americas/Celebracion de las Americas, has been held for the past four years.
