Welcomes New Teachers
As
of Monday, Irving ISD had hired 432 new teachers and 10 new
administrators for the 2007-2008 school year. The new teacher breakdown
is as follows: elementary schools, 182; middle schools, 108; and high
schools, 142.
New teachers were recognized August 16 during the 52nd annual New
Teachers Luncheon at MacArthur High School, coordinated by the Greater
Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce. The presenting sponsor was
Allstate.
Tommy Gonzalez, city manager for the City of Irving, served as the
luncheon emcee. Chris Wallace, president/CEO of the chamber, and IISD
Board President Michael Hill also spoke. Sponsor comments were provided
by Mike Daugherty of Allstate.

District Awarded
$479,738 in Grants
Irving ISD has been awarded $479,738 for the Professional Development
for Schools, Teachers, Administrators and Regions (STAR) Grant.
Each IISD middle school will be involved in the 21-month project, which
will provide extensive training in effective leadership for the
integration of advanced and emerging technologies into curriculum and
instruction to ensure student success in the 21st century.
Training topics will include the National Education Technology
standards, 21st Century Learning, integration of technology with
Marzano’s Classroom Strategies That Work, Levels of Technology
integration, and Professional Learning Communities.
Each campus will receive on-site and virtual mentoring from the
International Society of Technology in Education, Dr. Shirley Hord, and
Dr. Bill Sommers, as they develop and implement a technology-rich
mathematics or science intervention for students as well as establish
new or refine existing professional learning communities to become
highly effective collaborative support systems.

seven members of the IISD Board of Trustees. The goal is to familiarize
television and online viewers with IISD trustees and give them an
opportunity to learn more about them.

Townley Honored
by Everman ISD
Dr.
John Townley, retired superintendent of Irving ISD, and his wife, Polly,
are being honored by Everman ISD where they started their careers in
education more than 50 years ago. Everman trustees agreed to name
Everman’s next elementary school in honor of the couple. Groundbreaking
for the new school is expected in January.
This will be the second school named after Dr. Townley. The first was
Townley Elementary School in Irving, located at 1030 Vilbig, which
opened while he was serving as superintendent.

Irving ISD Labor
Day Closing Schedule
All Irving ISD schools and offices will be closed for the Labor Day
holiday on Monday, September 3.
Please note that the meeting of the IISD Board of Trustees, normally
held the first Monday of the month, will be held on Tuesday, September 4
at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building.

Night School
Offered
The Irving ISD Night School Program serves students in grades 9-12.
Courses will be held at Union Bower Center for Learning, and students
may take a maximum of one credit. Courses are offered based on student
enrollment and the availability of qualified instructors.
Potential candidates for the program include returning students
completing diploma requirements and seniors lacking sufficient credits
to complete graduation requirements by the end of the school year.
Registration will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. September 5 at Union Bower,
101 E. Union Bower. Please bring a completed and signed registration
form, which can be obtained by downloading the form at

Irving ISD Forms
Partnership with Lamar University
Irving
ISD has formed an academic partnership with Lamar University to offer
district employees a high-quality, fully-accredited master’s degrees in
Teacher Leadership and School Administration completed in 18 months for
a preferred price.
The goal of this innovative partnership with Lamar University is to
offer IISD employees the opportunity to participate in a relevant and
affordable master’s degree program to further their professional growth.
The admissions deadline for students who wish to start the program in
October is September 10. The deadline is to start in November is October
24.
An
information session about the partnership will be held at 4:30 p.m.
Thursday in the Board Room at the Administration Building.
