Four Schools Among the Best

Four Irving ISD schools have been recognized in the December issue of Texas Monthly as being among the Best Public Schools in the state. Hanes Elementary School, Austin Middle School, Crockett Middle School, and Lamar Middle School were selected for this year’s list.

The National Center for Educational Accountability identified schools for the Texas Monthly list that exhibit outstanding performance in comparison to similar schools across multiple grades and years. The Texas Monthly list includes 12 percent of elementary schools, 13 percent of middle schools, and eight percent of high schools after evaluating three years of data (2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07). In comparison, 53 percent of elementary schools, 34 percent of middle schools, and 13 percent of high schools were identified as Recognized or Exemplary in the Texas Education Agency Academic Excellence Indicator System for 2007.

Le & O’Connor Meet Supreme Court Justices

Jaclyn Le and Jonathan O’Connor were involved in sessions with justices at the United States Supreme Court.

Jaclyn Le and Jonathan O’Connor, seniors at Nimitz High School, were among 87 students from 34 states and Puerto Rico to participate in sessions with justices of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. November 5-6.

Sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation, Le and O’Connor were the only students from Texas. The students prepared for the sessions by studying the court case, Yick Wo v. Hopkins. The students were involved in two videotaping sessions with Justices Kennedy, Breyer and Scalia, and also had the opportunity to observe an actual Supreme Court hearing. The videotaped sessions will be made available next year for use in classrooms across America.
