Students Advance to DECA National

Irving High School DECA student Brent Felty won first place at the state competition in Corpus Christi, becoming the first Irving High student to qualify for competition at the national level since the school began its DECA program.

Distributive Education Clubs of America, or DECA, is an organization designed to create future leaders in the areas of management, marketing and entrepreneurship. Felty took the top award in Quick Serve Restaurant Management with Chris Woolfolk qualifying as an alternate for national competition in the area of automotive services marketing.

At The Academy of Irving ISD, a team of three students qualified to represent their chapter in the Entrepreneurship Promotional Event at the national level.  Academy juniors Emma Graziani, Chantal Jarayanpour and Morgan Hudgins wrote a 30 page paper and conducted a presentation about what the chapter had done to promote entrepreneurship as a career option at the state contest. The team won in their division and will make their second trip to national competition.

The DECA national contest, known as International Career Development Conference, will be held April 26-29 and encompasses competitive events as well as leadership seminars, motivational speakers and student officer elections.

Brent Felty, DECA member at Irving High School, won first place in the state in the category of Quick Serve Restaurant Management and will be the first Irving High student to compete at the national level.

Middle Schoolers Attend Girls’ Engineering Day

As part of National Engineers Week, the ExxonMobil company hosted area middle school girls at the company’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” February 28.

Girls from IISD’s Austin Middle School joined students from DISD’s Soto Elementary School, Communities in Schools Dallas Region, Inc., and Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas. More than 60 students were invited to ExxonMobil as part of the program to highlight career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students listened to engineers talk about their career experiences, participated in hands-on science experiments and were hosted by engineers and employees for lunch. In addition to promoting engineering career paths, the visit was also designed to attract young women to the engineering profession and raise awareness of the impact engineering careers have on everyday life.
