Early Voting Begins Monday

Early voting by personal appearance will begin Monday, April 28 and continues through May 6 for the May 10 IISD Trustee elections. Ballots for early voting may be cast at Irving City Hall, Irving Arts Center, and Dallas County Records Building as follows:

  • April 28-May 3, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • May 4, 1-6 p.m.
  • May 5-6, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

A list of polling places for voting on May 10 is available by accessing www.irvingisd.net/ppage/election.htm.

Candidate interviews can be viewed at the website and on Irving Schools Television via Time Warner Cable Channel 98 and Verizon FiOS Channel 33 through May 8. Interviews are broadcast daily at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Students Win Gold at State VASE

Students from Irving High School, MacArthur High School, and The Academy of Irving ISD traveled to the University of Houston at Clearlake April 12-13 to participate in the state level Visual Arts Scholastic Event.

Sixteen IISD students’ work was exhibited and judged among more than 1700 pieces of artwork submitted from around the state of Texas. Students were rated on a scale of 1 to 4 on design, technique, concept, and originality and eight Irving students were awarded gold medals for their submissions. In addition to the competitive events, students participated in workshops, viewed demonstrations, and received instruction from professional artists.

Free WIFI Access

Irving ISD currently provides laptops to each high school student attending school in the district. Though wireless internet is available at IISD schools, a connection to the Internet may not available at a student’s home.

Students who do not have home Internet service should become familiar with the free public access points around the community. For a list of free public WIFI access points, or to submit a free access point in Irving, visit www.irvingisd.net/wifi.

Irving ISD Council of PTAs

Irving ISD Council of PTAs conducted their Life Membership Banquet April 11 at Las Colinas Country Club. Three council awards were presented and 55 awards were presented from individual school PTAs. The organizations awarded the National PTA Lifetime Achievement Award, Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership Award, or Extended Service Award.

State Media Fair Winners

IISD submitted 54 projects to the state technology media competition sponsored by Texas Computer Education Association, 14 of which won the top award.

According to TCEA officials, the association received more than 600 project entries created by more than 1400 Texas students. IISD had five first-place winners, three second-place winners, and five third-place winners.

Students who created the winning projects will be receiving medals in May along with a participation certificate and report with scores and judges comments.

Elliott to Open Parent Center

Elliott Elementary School has scheduled the grand opening of a new parent center for 6:30 p.m. April 24 in the Elliott cafeteria.

Planning for the parent center program, named AMIGOS, was established in February 2008 as a result of the growing interest to strengthen parental involvement at Elliott. Dr. Rosie Garcia, an Elliott grandparent, will conduct parent workshops on Tuesday mornings and bilingual teachers will be holding computer classes on Thursday afternoons. Future plans for the Elliott parent center include establishing a family reading club, teaching drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and workshops on preventative child discipline.

The Elliott parent center is open Tuesdays from 8:15-11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m.


Parents and their children work together in the new Elliott Elementary School parent center in order to prepare for the center’s grand opening April 24.

Lions Roar

IISD students involved in choir, band, dance and orchestra will be featured in The Lions Roar Show 2008 at 7 p.m. May 3 at MacArthur Auditorium.

The event is sponsored by the Irving Noon Day Lions Club and is designed to showcase the talents of IISD students. Proceeds from the event will help to provide scholarships for Irving students.

Students from Union Bower Center for Learning traveled to Microsoft, Inc. on April 2 for a one-day workshop sponsored by the company’s DigiGirlz program.

Conference Features Librarians, Administrators

The “Freedom Fighters” book cart drill team comprised of IISD librarians and library clerks competed at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference. IISD librarians and administrators also received presentations from leaders in school library research as well as delivered presentations ranging from school and business partnerships to bid processes.

Academy Students Present Dental Program

Dental students from The Academy of Irving ISD provide a show for Clifton Early Childhood School students regarding dental health including a video and puppet show, and an opportunity for prekindergarten students to practice brushing the puppets’ teeth.

Academy Students Win at Computing Fest
Academy of Irving ISD students Tony Diaz, William Rogers, Chris Baker, Bradley Rushia, and Joseph Sawczyn won first place in the intermediate category at the University of Texas at Dallas Computing Fest April 11

Goggles Give Students Insight
School Resource Officer Curtis Kaloi from the Irving Police Department visited health classes at MacArthur High School April 9 to talk about the impairment that occurs when students drink. Students had the chance to wear specially designed “drunk goggles” to illustrate the effect of alcohol consumption. 

Computers Support Science at Travis
Science students at Travis Middle School work with eeePCs provided to the school by a grant from BestBuy as part of a program to increase student use of technology.

Science Night at Lively
Students, parents and teachers at Lively Elementary School participated in the school’s Science Night where they jumped in the “anti-gravity” bounce house, powered stomp rockets through the troposphere, took guided tours through the “Batcave” science lab, and competed against teachers in the game show, "Are You Smarter than a Lively Teacher?”.
