Student Scholarships Presented at Breakfast

Irving Schools Foundation awarded a total of $110,000 in scholarships to 77 IISD students and two teachers at the annual Nissan Breakfast with the Stars May 5 at the Four Seasons Resort & Club.

As part of the breakfast program, the Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship was announced. Cardwell, a 21-year-member of the IISD Board of Trustees was honored by friends and Trustees with the announcement of the scholarship in her honor, the first of which is planned to be awarded in 2009.

David Cannady, senior at MacArthur High School, and Barbara Cardwell, IISD Board of Trustees member, were both honored during the annual Breakfast with the Stars May 5. Cannady was the first recipient of the David H. Brune Memorial Scholarship, and Cardwell was honored with the announcement of the Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship.

Five new scholarships were also awarded including: David H. Brune Memorial Scholarship, Las Colinas Cancer Center Foundation Scholarship, Marilyn Polous Community Service Scholarship, Michael Sigurdson Memorial Scholarship, and Rebecca Gordon Memorial Scholarship. Nissan North America, the title sponsor for the event, also awarded two scholarships to students: the Nissan North America Scholarship and Nissan-Irving Professional Firefighters 9-11 Memorial.

ISF officials estimate the event grossed more than $100,000 in funds for the foundation including proceeds from donations, ticket sales, auctions, and raffles.

Student scholarships were limited to those who had not received a full scholarship from other sources. Recipients were selected by independent committees on the basis of grade point average, leadership and community & social service.
