Win Seats
This
past Saturday, Irving residents elected two new members to the Irving
ISD Board of Trustees.
Nancy L. Jones won the Place 1 seat being vacated by Michael Hill. Jones
won 51 percent of the vote over candidates Gina Bates, who garnered 32
percent, and Stacey Ponce, who received 17 percent.

Jenkins was elected to the Place 2 seat being vacated by Barbara
Cardwell, winning 82 percent of the vote. Candidate Jorge Alfonso Chac
II collected 18 percent.
Election results are
unofficial until the vote is canvassed. Newly elected trustees will be
sworn-in and installed at the May 19 board meeting; board officers for
2008-2009 will also be elected.

Sixty-two IISD employees announced their retirement during the 2007-2008
school year, and the annual banquet will recognize more than 700 total
years of service by the 34 retirees who will attend. For 18 years, the
event has been held at the DFW Marriott and includes attendance from
retirees, school board members, IISD administrators and teachers.

Success at State Track & Field
Zaquita McClanahan, junior at Irving High School, and Michael Brooks,
junior at MacArthur High School, represented Irving ISD at State Track &
Field Championships April 25-26.
Traveling to University of Texas at Austin, McClanahan and Brooks won
third place and second place, respectively, in their events. McClanahan
took the bronze medal in the shot-put with a distance of 45 feet, 10.25
inches. Brooks took the silver medal in the triple-jump with a distance
of 47 feet, 9.75 inches.

Student Finds Niche Among Poets

Grimaldo |
David Grimaldo, senior at Irving High School, read his original poetry
at the Dallas Theater Center DaVerse Lounge hosted by Will Richey
April 11. DaVerse Lounge features young artists age 21 and
younger from around the metroplex.
On
April 18, Grimaldo participated in the Dallas Museum of Art Late Nights
Fresh Ink series. He performed with former United States Poet Laureate
and Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Hass following an invitation from the
former laureate. Grimaldo, as well as student spoken-word artists from
around the Dallas area, performed at the event.

Athletes of the Month

Zaquita McClanahan |
Zaquita McClanahan, junior at Irving High School, is IISD
female athlete of the month for May. McClanahan maintains a
3.8 GPA, writes poetry in her spare time, and enjoys debate
and English. In the shot-put, her signature track & field
event, she has placed at least third in every track meet in
which she has participated since coming to Irving High
School. Her freshman and sophomore years, McClanahan missed
qualifying for state competition by two inches, but
qualified for state this year, winning second place. |

Brad Lewis |
Brad Lewis, senior at Nimitz High School, is IISD male
athlete of the month for May. Lewis has played baseball for
Nimitz all four of his high-school years and has played a
variety of positions, primarily the position of catcher. He
hits in the leadoff spot for the Vikings and has earned a
.288 batting average. A devoted student, Lewis has
maintained perfect attendance for 12 years. He is active in
his church and enjoys fishing and working on cars. |

Legal Benefits Offered
Irving ISD has partnered with Legal Club of America to
offer a family protection plan to include free and discounted legal
care, tax preparation and advice, financial education and credit
counseling, identity theft solutions, and LifeEvents counseling.
The family protection plan will be made available to IISD

Teacher Enrichment Grants Awarded
Eight
Irving ISD teachers have been awarded Enrichment Grants from the Irving
Schools Foundation, totaling more than $1,750 in ISF funding for
teachers for the month of April.
Teachers receiving grants are: Yvette Brown, counselor, Gilbert
Elementary School; Sarah Perizzolo, Read Right teacher, Davis Elementary
School; Tracy Detchemendy, first grade teacher, Hanes Elementary School;
Gail Bernard, counselor, Hanes Elementary School; Jodi Douris, special
education teacher, Townsell Elementary School; Lisa Zuniga, special
education teacher, Keyes Elementary School; Hector Rojas, fourth grade
teacher, Davis Elementary School; and Amy Moore, art teacher, The
Academy of Irving ISD.
ISF
teacher enrichment grants are awarded monthly to IISD teachers to attend
workshops not usually funded by the school district. For teachers
