Peer Mediation

Davis Elementary students are learning a lesson now that will be valuable to them when they’re adults … how to handle disagreements.

Davis recently began a peer mediation program in which fourth and fifth grade students are trained to mediate between people or groups of people at odds.

“We’re very excited about this new program because it will teach children valuable skills,” Davis teacher Cheryl Wilkinson said.

The peer mediators were trained for two full days. Robin Shrode and Amanda Baker, mediator representatives from Irving High School helped to train the students. For their participation, the students received a certificate and T-shirt that they designed. They’re allowed to wear the T-shirt to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the days that they mediate.

Mediation sessions have begun with great success. The program is supervised by Davis counselors Susan Creason and Kimest Sanders.

The students involved in the program are Jamie Croom, Joe Hernandez, Devon Nolan, Justin Abila, Paulina Monzon, Kaitlyn Hall, Alexandra Kennedy, Irish Griffin, Omar Rivera, Sana Ahmed, Oscar Jimenez, Micha Phillips, Karen Cardenas, Elizabeth Alcantar, Jessica Ayala, Maegan Mariscal, Jeremy Grant, Austin Gelber, and Ashlyn Green.
