All-City Band Results
Irving
ISD Fine Arts Department will present the middle and high school IISD
All-City Band Concert starting at 4 p.m. January 24 at Nimitz High
School Auditorium.

Following auditions held in October,
79 high school musicians and 88 middle school musicians were selected
from approximately 300 entries. For the high school band, 31 students
were selected from MacArthur High School, 26 from Nimitz High School,
and 22 from Irving High School. For the middle school band, 24 students
were selected from Bowie Middle School, 24 from de Zavala Middle School,
19 from Lamar Middle School, nine from Travis middle school, four from
Crockett Middle School, three from Houston Middle School, and two from
Austin Middle School.
In preparation for the concert,
guest conductors will have clinics for students on January 23 and the
morning of January 24. The middle school band will perform Great
Movie Adventures, Sabre Dance, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
High school performances will include The Jig is Up, An
American Elegy, and Bugles and Drums.

District Spelling Bees on ISTV
IISD
high school zone spelling bees are scheduled for 1 p.m. January 21, 22
and 28 in the Administration Building boardroom and will be aired live
on Irving Schools Television.
The MacArthur High School Zone bee
was held yesterday, the Nimitz High School Zone bee will be today, and
the Irving High School Zone bee will take place January 28. Eighteen
spellers from each zone will compete and one winner and one alternate
from each zone will be determined. Three zone winners and three
alternates will advance to the
Dallas County
Countywide Spelling Bee, held at 9:30 a.m.
January 30
in the Vaughn Room of the Selma-Dallas Public Library.

Academy Students, Teachers Attend
Inauguration
Fifteen students and three teachers
from The Academy of Irving ISD attended the presidential inauguration in
Washington, D.C. January 20.
Led by
Academy social studies teacher Connie Cooley, students conducted
fundraising activities throughout 2008 to be able to attend. Gustavo
Miralda, advertising design student at the Academy, designed a T-shirt
for the group to wear to the inauguration and DeVry University, partner
in education with the Academy, paid for the shirts as well as donated
$750 toward trip expenses.

and teachers who traveled to the inauguration are: Alma Carrillo, Brian

High School Career Days
The
Greater Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the 14th
Annual Business Exchange Days January 29-30 for the benefit of Irving
ISD high school juniors and seniors.
This event gives students the
opportunity to hear from local business professionals about various
careers. Irving High School, MacArthur High School, Union Bower Center
for Learning, and The Academy of Irving ISD will conduct the event on
January 29. The Academy will also host speakers January 30.
IISD teachers have requested more
than 160 business professionals to make presentations related to topics
in their respective careers and some opportunities to speak are still
available.

Cosmetology Services Open to Public
Under
the direct instruction and supervision of cosmetology instructor Wendy
Watson, cosmetology students at Ratteree Career Development Center are
now offering their services to the public.
Hours of service are Monday – Friday
from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Ratteree Center is located
at 2121 s. MacArthur Blvd.
