Seniors Earn Commended Status

Five IISD seniors have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Seniors selected as Commended Students are:

  • Pearl Choi, MacArthur High School

  • Andrew Ellington, MacArthur High School

  • Max Savage, MacArthur High School

  • Silvana Torres, Nimitz High School

  • Mauricio Valdovinos, Nimitz. High School

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered this year’s competition. Students were qualified according to their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test taken during the junior year of high school.

13 National Hispanic Scholars

Thirteen Irving ISD seniors have been named National Hispanic Scholar for their outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) among minority students.

Recognitions are coordinated through The College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Dugger to Speak at Heritage Society


Neil Dugger, Ed.D.

Dr. Neil Dugger, IISD interim superintendent, will present “100 Years of Learning in the Irving ISD” at a meeting of the Irving Heritage Society October 12.

The Heritage Society meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Irving Central Library auditorium, located at 801 West Irving Blvd. Refreshments will be served, door prizes awarded, and guests are welcome. Disability Poster Contest Winners

IISD students will be recognized at the Irving City Council meeting October 22 for winning awards in the city’s Disabilities Awareness Month poster art contest.

First place winners include:

Since 2001, the annual poster contest has been sponsored by The Irving Advisory Committee on Disabilities and is open to fifth and sixth grade students. Irving Schools Foundation has awarded 19 Teacher Enrichment Grants for September.

  • Lynette Bachand, Travis Middle School

  • Kim Leitko, Bowie Middle School

The grants provide teachers with funding for professional development opportunities including attendance at seminars and workshops. Applications from teachers are due by the 10th of each month, are awarded for as much as $500 each, and are distributed September through May. Davis Dedicates Campaign to Teacher

Staff at Davis Elementary School dedicated their fundraising efforts for the annual Irving Schools Foundation payroll deduction campaign to Terry Davis, former kindergarten teacher at Davis, who passed away during the summer. Davis staff raised $4,708 for the campaign.

Strength in Action at MacArthur
On September 22, MacArthur High School hosted the Strength in Action-Hispanic Heritage Month Tour sponsored by the U.S. Army.

PTA Hosts Membership Dance
The Parent-Teacher Association at Stipes Elementary School hosted a 1950’s-themed sock hop September 24 to encourage parents to join the organization.

Thomas Haley Proactive Against Bullying
Officer Greg Spivey from the Irving Police Department visited fourth graders at Thomas Haley Elementary School October 2 to teach students how to deal with bullying.
