SBEC Teacher Registration

SBEC LogoThe State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) is requiring all certificate holders to maintain a current mailing address in their online database. SBEC will use the contact information from that source to send appropriate and timely information to all certificate holders. This is especially important for IISD employees who hold the Standard Certificate that expires after five years.

To enter or change an address, SBEC is requesting that all teachers access the database via their website at www.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECOnline/appedu.htm Once on the initial information screen, click to access Online System, then click ‘Create My Account With SBEC.’ You will be directed to create a login name and password in this secure site. Once you complete this process, you will be able to access your information with SBEC.

On Friday, fifth grade students from Elliott Elementary School’s broadcast team visited the studios of Channel 58, KDTX-TV for a tour of the local station of the Trinity Broadcast Network. Tom Schuessler, a KDTX employee and Elliott parent, invited students on the tour. Students operate Elliott’s television equipment every day for morning announcements. They were able to see how their school’s broadcast system compares to that of a television station, and some even got to operate the cameras.

Houston Penny Wars

Students at Houston Middle School have been at war with one another this holiday season – over who could offer the most help to needy neighbors. Houston’s annual Penny War pitted each grade at the school against the other two in a race to raise money for holiday donations to local charities. The Houston Student Council organized the two-week event in which students could earn one point for their grade for every penny they donated, and subtract points from the scores of other grades by donating nickels, dimes, quarters and bills.

For the third year in a row, the sixth grade won the competition followed by grades seven and eight. All together, the school raised more than $1,800 to help brighten the holidays for Irving families.

Whirlwind Technology

Pamela Eason's fifth grade class at Elliott Elementary School held a joint lesson with Jill Lindsay's fifth grade class at Warren Point Elementary in Fair Lawn, New Jersey on Wednesday. Lindsay's class presented research it had done on tornadoes and then asked the Texans about their experiences with severe weather. The meeting represented the first time that an IISD class has videoconferenced with a class of their peers from outside the district.

New Schools Continue to Win Design Awards

The district’s two newest schools, The Academy of Irving ISD and de Zavala Middle School, have both been recognized with awards for their architecture. Since the first of such awards were reported by the District Weekly in September, the Academy has won eight more awards and de Zavala has won four more.

Representatives from Powell/PSP and F&S Architects, the design firms responsible for the Academy and de Zavala respectively, were present at the Board of Trustees meeting Monday night to share news of the awards with the District.

The project earned the recognition both for the architectural style of the buildings as well as their functionality and, in de Zavala’s case, its synergistic use of a construction site bordering protected wetlands.
