Crisis Management

A key element in providing for a safe and secure environment within Irving ISD schools is the implementation of an effective crisis management plan.  Each campus principal has a Crisis Management Handbook which serves as a guideline in the event of an emergency.  Within this handbook are detailed protocols to follow for specific crisis scenarios.  A sampling of these scenarios includes:

  • Bomb Threat
  • Bus Accident
  • Irate Person on Campus
  • Death at School
  • Fire
  • Missing Person
  • National Emergency
  • Weapons

Each scenario gives a step-by-step strategy which the campus administrator may follow in working through the emergency.  Since each event may be different, these guidelines are not meant to restrict the response of a principal in managing a crisis condition.

In addition to the handbook, each classroom teacher has been provided a Teacher Crisis Management Quick Reference Guide.  This guide contains scenario protocols for a number of situations which would call for immediate action on the part of the teacher.  A sampling includes what actions to take in the event of a fire, or what to do should there be an intruder; the action steps are targeted for better classroom management in the event of an emergency.

Finally, each campus crisis management team undergoes annual “tabletop” crisis scenario training.  This training is given through the cooperative efforts of the Parent/Student Services department and the Security department.  Campus members assemble to talk through what action steps each member would take in order to protect our students should a crisis event occur at their campus.

We want our district family to know that while we believe the schoolhouse is the safest place in the community, it is only because good and caring people “sweat the details of security behind the scenes.
