Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Symptoms

  • Temperature greater than 100.5;  and

  • Coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and/or hypoxia; and

  • Travel within 10 days of onset of symptoms to China, Hong Kong, Vietnam or Singapore; or

  • Close contact within 10 days of onset of symptoms with a person with a respiratory illness who traveled to a SARS area or a person known to be a suspected SARS case.

Facts

Incubation period is typically 2-7 days, but may be up to 10.

The risk of contracting SARS remains relatively low.

Majority of cases have been adults 25-70 years of age.

A few cases have been reported among children younger than 15.
