The
HealthierUS School Challenge program, as administered by the United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA), recognizes excellence
in overall student health and nutrition. Under this program,
cafeteria lunches have to meet some of the most stringent nutrition
requirements in the country. At the same time, schools have to document
that they provide superior nutrition education for their students.
Schools also have to document that they provide numerous and varied
opportunities for students to exercise. In short, the schools
themselves, and school food service, cooperate as partners to put
students first.
Obviously, the staff and students at
these eleven schools have taken a leadership position in Texas, and
across our country, in the areas of healthy school meals, nutrition
education, and physical exercise.
The eleven schools that have earned
Silver School awards are:
Barton Elementary
Britain Elementary
John Haley Elementary
Johnston Elementary
Lively Elementary
Schulze Elementary
Brandenburg Elementary
Hanes Elementary
Davis Elementary
FM Gilbert Elementary
Stipes Elementary

With a donation from
DairyMax, Johnston Elementary School joins Hanes and Farine
elementary schools in offering free breakfast to all
students enrolled. The Johnston program differs from the
other schools in that instead of taking students to the
cafeteria for breakfast, students are served breakfast in
their classrooms to start the day. Johnston was awarded the
USDA HealthierUS Challenge Silver School award for 2007-2009
in recognition of the schools’ food service programs. |
