Breakfast Participation Soars at BIC Schools

A recent evaluation and analysis of breakfast participation rates at three IISD schools that began the “Breakfast in the Classroom” (BIC) program this school year shows that breakfast participation rates by students have soared.  J. Haley, Lively, and Townsell elementary schools all have realized huge gains in breakfast participation rates by their students.

November 2006 data shows that J. Haley elementary school, which previously operated the “universal breakfast program,” has nearly doubled their average daily breakfast participation.  The same analysis shows that both Lively and Townsell elementary schools, each of which offered traditional breakfast service until the start of this school year, have increased their average daily breakfast participation by nearly 300%!  All increases were calculated by comparing last year’s average daily breakfast participation rates to the participation rates from November 2006.

The “Breakfast in the Classroom” program provides breakfasts at no charge to all students.  The most unique feature of this program is that breakfasts are delivered to each classroom in the morning, and then students eat their meal at their desks.  Many teachers conduct nutrition education while their students eat breakfast.

Eight IISD elementary schools currently operate the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program, and the Food Service Department hopes to increase that number in the coming years.
