The school lunch program
at T.J. Lee Elementary School and eight others from around
the nation will be featured in a film project highlighting
the best practices of school lunchrooms.
The project, titled
Cooks for Kids, is being coordinated by the National
Food Service Management Institute at the University of
Mississippi. Although the nine-part program is designed as a
training tool for school food service personnel across the
nation, the film’s producers also hope to air the program on
public television.
T.J. Lee was chosen
because of the USDA Team Nutrition Silver Award it won last
fall in conjunction with Irving ISD Food Service Department.
T.J. Lee was the first school in Texas to receive this
designation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through
its HealthierUS Schools Challenge program.
The Silver School
designation is based on meeting specific and stringent
student health criteria, including a commitment by school
food service to serve school lunches that meet enhanced
nutrition standards.
Filming at the school is
scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 19. Featured menu
items include charro beans, Spanish rice made with brown
rice, and freshly made corn tortillas. T.J. Lee elementary
school and the IISD Food Service Department are honored to
be one of the nine school programs nationwide that will be
highlighted via this project.
