USDA Web Site Teaches Children about Nutrition

The Unites States Department of Agriculture’s web site, www.MyPyramid.gov, now features instructions and fun about nutrition education aimed at young children.  In this modern era of TV and video games for children, what better way to teach young children about health lessons than a video game?  If you check out the kids section of MyPyramid.gov, you’ll find the “My Pyramid Blast Off” game, in which kids have to select balanced meals to meet their daily requirements and have to get at least 60 minutes of activity per day, in order to successfully fuel their rocket for the mission.

It is not an easy game, either.  Eating healthy, and maintaining an active lifestyle, is difficult for many people.  In the game, if you select too much fuel (i.e. eat too much), your mission fails.  If you don’t have enough serving of foods from the various food groups, your rocket won’t reach the power planet.  Success in this game, as often times in life, takes planning and requires moderation and self-control, but is also a lot of fun.

Once the game playing is over, you’ll find additional tools and information regarding healthy eating and active lifestyles.  Posters, coloring sheets, and resources for teachers and other adults are available for viewing or downloading.  Overall, the kids section of www.MyPyramid.gov is an excellent nutrition resource for both adults and children.  Be sure to visit soon!
