The Food Service Department provided many hundreds of breakfasts and lunches to job-seekers and district employees alike, at the district’s annual Job Fair, held at the Academy of Irving ISD, on May 5, 2007.

Food Service Department employees participated in Farine Elementary School’s Career Day on Friday, May 18th, 2007.

The Food Service Department participated in Brown Elementary School’s inaugural Block Party on May 18, 2007.  That evening, Food Service employees handed out free slices of fresh Texas watermelon, provided brochures and handouts about good nutrition, and offered little prizes to students of all ages.  The department was thrilled to be a part of Brown Elementary School’s Block Party, and hopes to make this an annual event.

Food Service Department employees participated in Britain Elementary School’s Read Aloud Day on Tuesday, May 29th, 2007.

Food Service Department employees, Nimitz cafeteria employees, and a special panel of taste-testers, approved a recipe for a new calzone at the four high school’s Italian eateries.  The Chicken Alfredo Calzone will make its debut in the 07-08 school year.  Made with lean chicken, heart-healthy olive oil, a hint of Alfredo sauce, and low-fat mozzarella cheese, this calzone is delicious, nutritious, and ready to be enjoyed!

A representative from the Food Service Department served on a focus group for the City of Irving’s Inspections Department, aimed at implementing a basic food safety program for all food employees.  A training film to be used in the program was filmed at Townley Elementary School.

The Food Service Department is currently partnering with the IISD Special Education Services division to add a district food service location to the work-based-learning program.

New for 2007-2008, the Food Service Department’s Catering Department will be serving premium coffee!  This premium blend of select coffee beans, roasted to perfection, provides an outstanding cup of coffee, in either regular or decaffeinated varieties.  Best of all, prices for coffee will not increase in the 2007-2008 school year!

Lively Elementary School’s entire school staff enjoyed a free Big Daddy’s pizza party on Friday, June 1, for their being the school with the most “Classroom Pizza Party” orders for the 2006-2007 school year.

The Food Service Department tested home-made corn tortillas at Nimitz High and T.J. Lee Elementary Schools.  Based on the overwhelmingly positive response of students and other customers, the department plans to serve freshly-made corn tortillas at select schools in 2007-2008.

The Food Service Department ran the Summer Meal Program at 28 school sites this year – a record number of locations!!!
