Peanut-free Cafeteria Menus Announced

The IISD Food Service Department recently announced that, effective December 1, 2006, all early childhood and elementary cafeterias will cease serving foods that contain peanuts/peanut butter.  These school cafeterias currently serve three foods that contain peanuts and/or peanut butter:

bullet

peanut butter & jelly sandwiches

bullet

Uncrustables sandwiches

bullet

peanut butter crackers

All of these foods will be removed permanently from the early childhood and elementary school cafeterias by December 1, 2006.

Once these three foods are removed, no foods will be served from these school cafeterias that contain peanuts.  Some processed foods served in the cafeterias, however, may still have been made in facilities that use or process peanuts.

People who are allergic to peanuts are at great risk in environments where peanut-containing products are served or provided.  If these individuals are exposed to peanuts, their allergic reactions can be severe, and in some cases can cause death.

By removing the three products that contain peanuts/peanut butter from the early childhood and elementary cafeteria menus, a safer school cafeteria environment will be provided to students.
