Johnston, Hanes, & Farine to start NEW Breakfast Programs!

Just in time for the New Year 2008, Johnston, Hanes, and Farine elementary schools will start NEW school breakfast programs.

On January 7, 2008, Hanes and Farine Elementary Schools will begin the Universal Breakfast program, under which all students eat breakfast for FREE!!!  Students at Hanes and Farine will still report to the cafeteria for breakfast and will still go through the cafeteria lines, but they will receive their breakfasts at no charge, regardless of their meal status (i.e. free, reduced, or paid).  Hanes and Farine become the third and fourth, respectively, elementary schools this school year to adopt the Universal Breakfast program.

Meanwhile, Johnstone Elementary School will, on January 23, 2008 (at the end of the semester), start the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program.  Under the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program, all students eat breakfast for FREE!  The big difference between the Universal Breakfast and “Breakfast in the Classroom” programs is that, under the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program, the Food Service Department delivers the breakfasts to the classrooms before the start of school.  Once the morning bell rings, both students and teachers report to their classrooms, and they find breakfasts waiting for them!  Students and teachers alike then spend a few minutes eating healthy breakfasts, and then move on to academic subjects.  Johnston becomes the 12th elementary school in the district to adopt the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program (and the 15th of the combined elementary and early childhood schools).

Numerous studies indicate and document the many benefits of eating a healthy breakfast.  These include, but are not limited to, fewer stomach and head aches among students (resulting in fewer morning trips to school nurses), better overall behavior among students, better overall academic achievement, fewer tardies, etc.  The Food Service Department is pleased to partner with these two excellent schools to make breakfast more accessible than ever before for their respective students.
