Putting Students First:
Seven Schools Offer New Breakfast Programs
Seven IISD schools will
offer new breakfast programs in 2007-2008 providing students with
free breakfasts! Irving ISD will
expand their "Breakfast in the Classroom" program to
six more schools and add one new school the the "Universal
Breakfast Program."

Breakfast in the Classroom Program
Irving ISD’s acclaimed
“Breakfast in the Classroom” program will expand to six more
schools for the 2007-2008 school year. These schools are:
ELEMENTARY
-
Brandenburg Elementary
-
T.J. Lee Elementary
- T.
Haley Elementary
EARLY CHILDHOOD
-
Clifton Early Childhood
-
Kinkeade Early Childhood
-
Pierce Early Childhood
Under the “Breakfast in
the Classroom” program, all students and teachers eat
breakfast at no charge. The breakfasts are delivered in
insulated containers to the classrooms before the start of
the school day.
When
the teacher and students arrive in the classroom, breakfast
is there, waiting for them. Classes generally spend the
first ten minutes of the day eating breakfast and receiving
health and nutrition-related instruction.
When breakfast is over,
the insulated containers are placed into the hallway, to be
picked up by staff. Trash bags are also placed in the
hallway for pick-up.
With the addition of
these six schools, a total of fourteen IISD schools now
participate in the “Breakfast in the Classroom” program.
The IISD Food Service Department hopes to increase that
number in the 2008-2009 school year.

Universal Breakfast Program
In addition to the
“Breakfast in the Classroom” program, the IISD Food Service
Department also offers the “Universal Breakfast” program,
under which all students eat breakfast for free, but the
students still report to, and eat in, the school cafeteria.
New for 2007-2008, the following school is offering this
program:
ELEMENTARY
In addition to Brown
Elementary, Austin Middle School has offered this program
for years. The “Universal Breakfast” program is ideal for
schools that want to offer their students the benefit of
breakfast at no charge, but in a different format than the
“Breakfast in the Classroom” program.

To be
successful, these two innovative breakfast programs require partnerships
between the schools and the Food Service Department. Hand in hand, the
many schools that offer these programs and food service work together to
put students first. The Food Service Department is extremely pleased to
have partnered with the seven schools that are offering one of these two
programs in 2007-2008.
Numerous
studies indicate that children who eat healthy breakfasts perform better
in school, in a variety of areas. The IISD “Breakfast in the Classroom”
and “Universal Breakfast” programs dramatically increase the number of
students who eat healthy school breakfasts, typically two to four
times the previous level of participation. As a result, more
students than ever before start their day with delicious, nutritionally
complete breakfasts, and these students are thus better prepared to
learn and excel in school. |
