Texas Department of Agriculture
Releases School Nutrition Guidelines

In early March, the Texas Department of Agriculture released a sweeping and comprehensive policy at increasing the health of foods and beverages available in public schools in Texas.  With Texas facing an obesity crisis in students (more than 35% of Texas school children are considered overweight or obese), these new regulations should promote a healthier school environment.  Complete information on the regulations can be found at this link:

How will Irving school cafeterias be affected?

Irving ISD Director of Food Service Michael Rosenberger notes that Irving school cafeterias are already well prepared for these changes, and have, in the past few years, implemented many of the requirements of the TDA policy.  “We’re ahead of the changes, in many areas”, he noted.  For example, schools already offer fresh fruit on all meal service lines, already offer low and non-fat milk, and do not fry anything in the early childhood or elementary schools.

Other changes will meet policy requirements in the 04-05 school year.  The real winners, however, are the students.  With fewer “junk” foods available, it is hoped and expected that students will turn to healthier meal options and make better food choices.  After all, nutritious meals can improve students’ concentration and help them succeed academically.
